Flood Forecast
By Coburg Tigers coach, David Flood
A couple of rounds into the 2004 VFL season, I’m pleased to report that the Richmond-list players have been performing consistently well for the Coburg Tigers.
Obviously, my job as Coburg’s coach is not only to win games of football, but to help with the development of the young players on Richmond’s list, as well as ensuring the older ones are given the best possible chance of regaining their place in the senior side.
One of those more experienced types, who has been fantastic for us in both our games this season, has been ex-Blue Simon Fletcher. His professionalism, the way he goes about his footy, is just a real credit to him. He’s been getting a heap of the ball and showing terrific leadership, both on and off the field.
Adam Houlihan has also been in really good form. He’s knocked up getting the ball, has really worked hard for it, and has also been a good leader around the club from our point of view. Unfortunately for Adam, he hurt his hamstring in last Sunday’s match against Springvale and will be sidelined this week. Had that not occurred, I’m sure he would have been a strong chance to have been recalled to the Richmond team for Saturday night’s clash with Geelong at Telstra Dome.
Rory Hilton, on the comeback trail from injury, produced some really good form for us last weekend and no doubt he’ll soon be pressing for AFL selection. He’s now got a good platform to build his season on.
Kayne Pettifer did some exciting things in the game against Springvale. His aerial work was especially good and he generated plenty of life up forward for us.
Jay Schulz wasn’t as prominent as he’d been the week before, but there’s no doubt he’s a good, young talent who the Richmond Football Club can really look forward to developing to his full potential in the years to come.
Kelvin Moore, down back, has been excellent – really solid and reliable.
Marc Dragicevic has been most consistent, winning a lot of ball and using it well. His ability to run with the ball through the corridor shows that his levels of confidence are increasing.
Luke Weller has been doing a fine job at full-back in shutting his opponents out of the game and is pushing his name up for Richmond selection.
Shane Tuck has been doing some really good work in close at the stoppages and marking the ball cleanly.
Justin Blumfield, coming back from injury, played a half with us in Round 1 (the second half), and that was pretty much just a hit-out to get the ‘cobwebs’ out of the system. Then, last Sunday, he played just over three quarters. With another good run under his belt, I reckon he’d be just about ready to resume in the AFL.
Daniel Jackson, who doesn’t turn 18 until late this month, is a great pick-up for Richmond. He attacks the ball with plenty of confidence, is really hard at it, and shows good judgment.
Andrew Raines has given us a lift in both games when he’s come off the bench due to his speed, run and energy.
Thomas Roach, likewise, provided the team with a big boost when he came onto the ground last Sunday after quarter-time. He just got better and better as the game wore on and used the ball intelligently going inside 50. It’s no surprise that he’s won promotion and will make his league debut with Richmond against Geelong on Saturday night.
