Thought you might like to know about a new book that's been released called Flying the Banner all about Freo's banner team.

The book is being launched this Thursday 14 July, 6:00pm at Fremantle Oval.

So come on down for a drink and a bite to eat and you'll get to hear some great stories about the banners and the hard-working people who make them.:thumbsu:

surely the banner has to be the gayest thing about AFL? I mean really, breaking through some crepe paper?

Im part of the interstate banner crew over here in Melbourne and I despise your comment.

Although it may seem a bit 'soft' running through crepe, It gives us die-hard and passionate supporters something to do on game day to be more involved with the club. The banner crew volunteer the time to make the banner plus get to the ground earlier to prep it and and hold it up on the ground.

It gives the club a chance to recognise players milestones with some hard work that goes into the banners, rather than a measly section in the record (RE: Pavs 250th) and is better than having the message just flash up on the scored board.

I would have a guess that some players wouldn't want to see the tradition of running through a banner lost. When I'm up in Sydney Im going to ask a couple of the players if they really like it or not.

If the crepe banner is a bit too soft Wigarus, would you suggest something a bit more tougher like a gauntlet of barbwire, a ropes course and raised cargo net so we only get the toughest players out on the field for each game?
Poor MJ wouldn't get a game as he would be stranded in the race and not letting go of his hand bag! ;)

:D that's funny.

I hate it when i see a great banner made and then the players duck under it or barely even rip it.
Its like wtf all that effort an they dont even go through it.
An wonder how the ones who go to all that trouble feel.

Atleast if there all charging through it an ripping it etc its getting used for what it was made for.
When they all duck under it an avoid it, wtf why even bother.

Maybe they should send a copy of the book to Brian Taylor who seems to be crying about the banner being out of date and not required anymore.

I like the banner but preferred it when they used to be able to say something that was a bit controversial, still always look to see what the banner says but sometimes they don't show it on TV.

I like a good banner :thumbsu:, dont know if id read the book though

the banner shits all over that ridiculous esky they used to run through in the early years :o

Seems that half the banners these days are just full of advertising, and they are never broken through by the players as they used to be.

Sounds like a weird book, much like most of the people in cheer squads.

it's more of an instruction manual than a book of stories i'm told

the stories are footnotes to the instructions where appropriate

not a huge fan of the banners and players running through them - if you want a message seen make a banner/flag - or better still buy a block out and hire out a tarpaulin net :P

throw it threw a smaller banner and see if you can get it fall in the bin?

bearing in mind your view of the bin is obscured by the banner. if all else fails, shuffle a few steps to the side and throw the book around the banner or throw another book through first so you get a clearer shot

From the Facebook page:

"When there's a big wind blowing the banner's just like a giant sail. Kevin talks about the difficulties of holding and controlling the banner."

Riveting stuff... I'm sold...!

Does it have anything about inflating the container?

I think we should bring that back.

Fairly ironic if this was light reading.
