I was just wondering when the Footy draft update is going to occur. It would be great if somebody gave their opinions on whether these national and rookie draft players will turn out to be worthy of their place in the pecking order and whether they think the each club has picked the ' right' players.

One would think that the end of this season would be an appropriate time for this exercise, as not a lot more can be said until the drafted players are given a season to progress in the AFL & VFL ranks.

Fair Point, but I'd like to see our ' experts' to the test , starting from the start of the season, and say every 8 rounds from that point and find out which experts are in fact fortune tellers ( or not). It's pretty easy to make bold predictions either negatively or positively about these kids while their unproven. I'd like to see these knowledgable draft posers have the chance to back up or infact concede with regards to their predictions as the season progresses.

Why judge a 17 year old after a dozen games of AFL football?

Your obsession with Hawthorn really is threatening to tear the very fabric of your life apart at the seams, Benters!

At any rate, I wasn't suggesting that a definitive assessment of draftees be made at the end of the 2005 season, but rather a first viable assessment of their development.

I also know it certainly wasn't me who made this inane statement...

Agreed. I know many coachs and experts which call him [Dowler] the best kid for his age they have ever seen.

Out and out gun. would have gone before Roughead / Franklin.

Id say 2nd after Deledio.

You wouldn't be judging a kid (and, effectively, two others) before any of them had even played a game of AFL football (********, one hasn't even been drafted) would you, Benters?!

Best kid for his age they have ever seen, but still second pick after deledio.
B mate your a crack up. :p

ROTFLMAO!!!

I'd give you the standard - "stop it or you'll go blind" warning, Benters, but I wouldn't want to deprive myself of the comic relief.

I may not be at McDonalds, but I'm certainly "loving it"...

Keep up the good work.

Tissue?

In terms of pre-draft talk it is only fair to rate the draties.

My point was in terms of 'how good' the kids are, its hardly fair judge after 1 season.

ie. Luke Ball after his first season was a nobody yet today we see him as an elite AFL player.

Games in first season of AFL football
0 - Adam Goodes
0 - Scott Lucas
3 - Mathew Lloyd
2 - Peter Bell
0 - Steven King
1 - Mathew Scarlett
0 - Luke Ball
0 - Adam Simpson
1 - Brent Harvey
3 - Jarred Rivers
1 - Warren Tredrea
0 - Chad Cornes
0 - Shaun Burgoyne

One season is not enough to make assesments in most cases.

I agree...

Just to reiterate.

By assessment, I am not talking about a done & dusted, definitive, end of story judgement of the players; merely a rundown on where they are at that particular point. Even if they're playing VFL football, comment can still be made regarding their form at that level and potential for promotion to the top flight.

818295 was suggesting an update assessment now, which I can't see the point in, as it wouldn't really tell us anything different to what we already know.

Annual progress reports, starting at the end of season 2005 would appear to make more sense, assuming that is even needed.
