Ive only ever came second in a footy tipping competition over my whole football life...

... so Im wondering; who is the "gun tipster" on our board and what is your secret. or secrets

My biggest failing is tipping the Crows to win weekly and Pork Power to lose; despite the draw, injuries, form, venue, suspensions, milestone games, recent flybuys, weather or plain gut feel.

Heeeeeeeeeeeellllllp!!:D

Someone must have a system.

well my sister duzent follow footy but last year she went in a tipping competition at work and won by picking the teams with the best odds in the paper each week....not the sort of thing i'd do coz i always have 2 pick the crows no matter wot, but hey it worked for her....

I've won a few tipping competitions over the years, TJ, and yes I do have a system.

What's the one thing that beats us all?? Memory!! We cant even remember for a week what really happened to 8 games a week ago in any detail.

The secret is to make your selections on a Sunday night for the coming week just after the last game has been played while it's still fresh in your mind. Write them down and tick the ones you're totally sure of and put a question mark against those that you think will be so close that injuries or suspensions could affect. Then when the treams come out the only reason you would change your selection is for this reason.

Golden rules - never pick on emotion and when in doubt pick the home team.

Try it - you'll be around the mark.

I won my work tipping competition last year. My secret was consistency. I only won the weekly prize once, but I continuely got 6/7/8. You will have to pick Port to be successfull  but at the end of the day when you have the money in your pocket it is worth the pain!

All the sacrifices we have 2 make 2 win ;)

One thing you can do is, no matter what, pick the home team if they are playing an interstate away team. The most upsets occur at that time. Without a doubt.

Otherwise...

The secret is get the first 4-5 weeks as right as you can. After that, the leaders have usually put a bit of a gap in the field, and
it's hard to make up much ground.

Pre-season form doesn't mean a huge amount - but historically 3 of the 4 teams who make the preseason semis go on to make the finals of the real thing.

Don't tip on emotion.

If you are sceptical about a team, don't jump on the bandwagon too quickly. Likewise, a slow start doesn't mean a team you rate are pants. Port and Collingwood were both slow out of the blocks last year, and Richmond won their first 3.

Always tip Brisbane.

Never tip the Saints.

After I broke my rule of always tipping Adelaide (1995-2001) my fortunes looked up...

I finished equal 11th last year in a competition that had 200+ in it - including 2 weekly jackpot wins. I was well chuffed. :)

oooh ohh, i won footy tips 2 years ago in year 10, i even beat my teacher who was a pretty good tipster ;) . but he was a slack arse and i had to wait a WHOLE year for my prize!!!

SWL... Just on your signature, not saying anything negative in regards to Reilly by any means - but even the Democrats have more credibility than Stephen Rowe ;)

Having just won a tipping competition last year (with an engraved cup plus some booty) I could not agree more with the above, Macca.

Golden rules:-

- always pick Adelaide and Port Adelaide at Footy Park
- likewise with interstate teams look at their away record irrespective where they are on the ladder eg Fremantle last year
- winning and losing streaks. Difficult for teams to win more than 4-5 in a row likewise difficult to lose more than 4-5 in a row. Teams become due for a win or loss.
- Beware of teams having travelled the previous week to Brisbane and Perth.
- go for the gut instinct and the first choice (don't procrastinate, it only makes it worse)
- remove all emotion (I remember back in the SANFL years ago as a youngster in the 70's, I always went for West Torrens and never got close to winning). Tip with your head not your heart. If money is involved you are a fool to rule with the heart. Sentiment wins nothing.

Lastly, for the first few weeks of the year be conservative, it is normally the first few weeks that people get behind and stay behind.

Good tipping.

lol! thats a good one

Well, TJ how are you doing with the tips so far?

I'm sitting with 5 out of 5 as of tonight. I guess quite a few others are too.

Apart from Adelaide, there are a couple of dicey ones on Sunday. My tips for Sunday are

Adelaide to beat Freo

Melbourne to beat Hawthorn

Geelong to beat Bulldogs

As I said, the last two were the hardest to pick IMO.

5 out of 5.

Sunday - Adelaide, Hawthorn and Bulldogs.

Yes, the last two created a few problems.

ohhh im on 4/5...i made the mistake of picking Port :(....my tips 4 today are Crows (of course!!!)
Melbourne (i was tossing up on this 1...)
Geelong

5/5 so far today. Lets see if I can go on with it today

Adelaide to beat Freo

Melbourne to beat Hawthorn

Geelong to beat Bulldogs.

I found Port Vs Eagles, Demons Vs Hawks and Cats Vs Bulldogs as the hardest to pick. Went with Eagles on home ground advantage.

Thanks for the "golden rules" macca

It has been a good week for favourites. I'm on 5/5.

The two value bets for the week (North and Sydney) as identified by Smart Gambler paid off so I am in the money too :)

Might go watch the replay of Bris v Ess now.

I have gotten 4/5 so far and I am tipping Hawthorn to beat Melbourne, Adelaide to beat Fremantle, and Geelong to beat the Western Bulldogs.

I'm on 5...went with all the home teams first round...Port were due for a loss in Perth, that's why I went with that one.
