Hurley is going to play in defence apparently so he is out of the forward group. You listed Hille/Ryder in the forward line yet don't include Kreuzer who will most likely spend a fair bit of time in the forward line with Warnock and Hampson as the rucks. You have a better defence but both forward lines are very, very similar. Apart from the ruckmen, Waite is the clear standout player out of those names and will be the most dangerous in the forward line imo.

Hurley remains an option up forward - no different to Waite who has always been talked up as a forward and yet has spent most of his time in defence. The only player in either team who has kicked more than five in a match is Williams who has kicked 8 more than once.
Both forward lines are similar in that it remains to be seen how certain players will go now that they are the number 1 targets in their forward line. I think we have more options but Williams aside they are all unproven.

Collingwood will find it hard to make the top 4 with a difficult draw.

Fremantle have a horrible first 5 games, a 2-3 or 3-2 split could see them make the 8.

Essendon travel only 3 times, the most underrated team of 2009 may bite people on the backsides going against the Bombers.

Can Sydney rebound from a disastrous 2009 and make the finals in Paul Roos last season as coach?

Some Essendon flogs are in for a very rude awakening come late August...
Yes.
It seems that the only people tipping Essendon to finish in the 8 are in fact Essendon supporters ( have a look at this thread), who have clearly overestimated the ability of their list on the back of a lucky finals spot in 2009.

Why is it any different to last year when everyone tipped us for botom 4.

Coming from a crows fan you'd think you would understand this. Obviously not.

All people remember is the final and the fact a few senior players have gone.

everyone thought we were in trouble when Madden and Daniher retired at the end of 92. We all remember how 93 turned out (not that I'm saying we will win the flag, just that retiring great footballers means new opportunities for players to replace them).

They do?

Essendon conceded more points than Carlton last year.

The Bombers have early picks playing at full back and CHB, but they don't have a better backline overrall. Our backline was in the bottom eight for points against before we lost players due to injury.

Their backline has lost McPhee.

i think you will find the vast majority of non-essendon supporters think the same...we can't all be wrong.

The vast majority of supporters thought Geelong would beat Hawthorn in 08 - we can't all be wrong, but we were.

A lot of people tipped us bottom 4 last year and Tigers top 8.

Fact is - opinion is not even worth three quartes of jack schite. It is an opinion. People passing off opinions as facts is where the problems start.

I am not convinced we'll make the top 8, but we have a good chance. We have improved each season for the lsat 3 years. The last two have been on the back of younger players devleoping. I see no reason why that trend can't continue. Of course we could have a bad year, but given we are getting stronger bodies that hopefully will translate into fewer injuries and more consistency which can only be a good thing.

If only it were that black and white.

What is it with Essendon Supporters thinking they are on the up. You made the finals last year because nobody wanted 8th. Oh Thats right you beat St kilda. If you played that game over 10 times essendon wouldnt win again.

They are a average team. They need to go back down the ladder and rebuild. They along with carlton will be heads of the bottom 8.
To be fair, it is only one Essendon supporter.

But he is very vocal.

gee our Kamikaze style wouldnt have anything to do with that useless stat, would it?

Our achillies heel in 09, the forward line, only half worked in a few games last year, 2 of em being your mob.

had conversation after conversation, and read 100x more this time last year on here about how bad Essendon would go.

Not going to get into it this year, bu arguments that 'we cant be wrong' holds little water, as 90% of people seemed to have us bottom four last year.

Missing lovett will be covered by the debut of Long and colyer and possibly dempsey being moved into the midfield, plus injury free seasons from davey and winderlich fingers crossed. And hopefully Jetta will have a bigger impact this year as well.

what are you on?

Yes.

There isn't a single Top 8 on this thread where poster hasn't included his own team in the Top 8. All Hawthorn, Geelong Stkilda, Collingwood, Adelaide and Bulldoga fans have gone at least Top 4 - most higher.

Also go back and have a look at the same thread last year. Most had us bottom 4. Based on the fact that we lost our best player (Hille) a few week into the season and a couple of others who we would have expected to be in out top few (McVeigh, Welsh) played nowhere near their previous standard you would expect us to be worse off not better. Inexplicable really!!

1. Bulldogs - almost their last shot at a flag this year
2. Geelong - will still be there or thereabouts but i don't think they'll win it next year
3. Adelaide - again will challenge but not win
4. Saints - would need another incredibly lucky year with injuries to get their revenge
5. Hawks - improving on '09 but there are still holes in their team and i don't think buddy will be 100% injury free this year
6. Lions - will be interesting to watch how Voss' fantasy football strategy goe
7. Pies - expect them to drop off a little but still be a challenger. The top 7 will be pretty tight this year
8. North - Shocking run with injuries in '09 plus a new coach and great drafting in the last 2-3 years should see us rise back into the 8

TOP 8
1. Western Bulldogs
2. Geelong
3. St Kilda
4. Hawthorn
5. Adelaide

7. Collingwood
8. Carlton
