Errr, you just right-click on whatevere driv you want reformatted via Windows Explorer and choose the format option.
Are you sure you want to do this though? It's an extremely drastic action, and by the very nature of the question and with all due respect, it doesn't sound like you are computer savvy enough to want to risk formatting anything but data drives.

If you want to whack the whole thing over the head and start from scratch, just boot off the XP CD and it will give you the option to do so. Format partitions, install XP again, the lot...

yeah i hate formatting. i ahve to burn everything to cd or move it to another drive.

I format on a regular basis, just so I can experience the speed of a fresh PC.

do not recomend it for newbies or the unexperienced as they may finish off worse off
if you want to reformat and are sure of it,
FOR XP WINDOWS
reboot your computer
hold down f8 key as it boots
you should get a series of options to choose from
select command prompt boot OPTION.
then to format your drives say c drive type:
format c: AND HIT THE ENTER KEY.
it will ask you if you are sure you want to do this Y/N
once formatted, use your recovery disks that came with the computer to reinstall windows and system drivers
or if all drives are now blank and u reinstall from a full windows disk, just put the cd in the drive restart your computer and follow the prompts.
WINDOWS 98 OWNERS
you will need to boot the computer with the supplied floppy boot disk. then
change the directory to the cd drive and type,,,,
setup.exe and then hit enter. the cd will take over from there.

Oh, some simple steps for follow for those formatting with Windows XP.
You will need:
Your Windows XP CD
A working CD Rom drive
A keyboard
A mouse
(Well, i dunno, he could be a total newbie)
When your computer is booting up (When it counts the ram) press 'DEL' or the delete button on your keyboard. This will take you into your bios. Now, it is important NOT to touch ANYTHING except the BOOT SEQUENCE of your PC.
Depending on your motherboard, the BOOT SEQUENCE settings can be found under numerous categories. The important thing is to search patient (takes about 1 minute to find) for the BOOT SEQUENCE settings. Make sure you set your CDROM to 'primary booting device' or the first boot option.
Save the changes and exit the BIOS.
Then, insert your Windows XP cd in your PC and reboot your computer. Your computer should automatically start the setup - a blue screen which will say 'Loading system setup files' or something along those lines...
Just patient wait until you are given a list of options. Formatting is NOT one of those as yet, however, installing Windows XP is. From memory, the button to press is enter. So, once again, the setup files will load.
You will then be greeted by another option, something like, which Hard Disk Drive do you wish to setup Windows XP? Quite simply, move the highlighted bar up and down using the arrow keys to the Hard Drive you want to format/reinstall Windows XP on.
Around this stage, the option to DELETE the partition should be available. I think deletion is denoted by the 'D' key on your keyboard, so once you are certain of what it is you want to do (MAKE SURE THE HIGHTLIGHED BAR IS ON THE HDD YOU WANT TO FORMAT), press the D key.
It will then say, this is a very serious procedure blah blah blah, press L to furtherly delete the partition (I think it's L).
Then, you will return to the screen with the highlighted bar. It should say something like, 'Unknown partition' or something like that...Basically, it's just the partition you erased all the data of. Select it (Highlighted bar) and press enter to format/setup Windows XP.
That's the best I can do for anybody who's formatting off the top of my head...

As someone who has used every flavour of Windows since 3.0 was released, I beg to differ. If configured properly (ie. not as it defaults to after installation) ME is just as stable and secure as any other flavour of Windows. Been happily using it for years, even dumping that bloated spyware XP in favour of it.
me was basically a patch or service pack release of 98. longhorn will be just as bloated as xp as more and more is put into it to make it compatible with all the new gizmos and gadgets out there.

All I really now about it is that it will be written entirely in .net rather than the win32, which should me it is a lot more flexible, secure and developer friendly (no more buffer overuns), but as it such a major rewrite (much more than from 2000 to XP) it likely the earlier versions will have a few bugs
I've got XP Pro on my desktop and laptop. My laptop is only for work and so I don't really bother with formatting as it doesn't get clogged up much, I do however format my desktop about 3 times a year.
Oh, and IMHO Windows ME is a piece of crud, if you don't like XP use Win 98 SE.

Loghorn is different in some ways. Buy this months APC magazine and there's a whole feature on it.
As for ME being owned by hackers or them stealing the code, I've yet to hear any proof of this.
Most, if not all, of the XP crap can be disabled. I can't understand why you wouldn't take the time to properly configure XP but you did so with ME, which would take a miracle IMO. Anyway here's a helpful link.
