An observation after last night's dysfunction:

Context
Fletcher facing retirement
Hurley, while having numerous opportunities, hasn't been able to clunk the mark
Gumbleton, while being able to sometimes clunk the mark, seems out of favour
Daniher, considering his frame, is probably still a couple of seasons away from really establishing himself
Winderlich has a delicate body and isn't getting any younger
Jetta is inconsistent
Colyer is inconsistent
Dell is persistent but not a top line small
Crameri is a walk-up start

Of the above mentioned, with Fletcher going, I would see Hurley as a bit fit down back in order to sustain the potency of the backline.
I don't know that Gumby could hold up to the rigours of AFL level, though I would love to see that.

Where does this leave us for tall forwards?
Why shouldn't T-Bell be developed as a permanent forward? At least he leads, marks and kicks. Tank could be developed? Ryder likes to ruck all day.

...I'm thinking we need someone with same potency up forward as JD to foil, and perhaps a better small forward.

Hawthorn were spoiled for choice last night. Very frustrating to watch as their forwards and attacking mids lined up on the fifty arc.

Thoughts?

I think rightly or wrongly Hurley will be persisted with as a forward, Gumbleton will leave for more opportunity and Daniher will play 10-12 games. So I see us playing two different forward lines throughout the year.

FF- Ryder/Bellchambers - Daniher - Davey/Del Ollio/Kommer

HF- Crameri - Hurley - Winderlich

and

FF- Merrett - Ryder/Bellchambers - Davey/Del Ollio/Kommer

HF- Crameri - Hurley - Winderlich

T-Bell looks a good forward. I think Daniher has to be 2nd or 3rd forward and we turn Crameri into the Roughead type for Hawthorn with extended stints in the midfield, which also allows Watson, Goddard and Myers to rotate through there more. I also hope Kommer, Merrett and Colyer play stints in the midfield with more of a tank. What we need is a #1 lead-up style forward. Gumbleton is that man IMO. So I think this is the structure:

Watson/Goddard/Crameri/Myers - Gumbleton - Colyer/Kommer/Merrett/Zaharakis
Daniher - Bellchamber/Ryder - Winderlich/Dell'Olio/Davey

If Bellchambers can be developed as a forward I'd like to see Gumby and TBell as our two tall forwards until Daniher is ready. When he is, Daniher and TBell as a forward/ruck combo and Ryder as a ruck/utility could be gold. Ryder should play on ball all day. I wish it could be Hurley but I've lost my patience with him. All I could think was, Scott Lucas would have taken that. Franklin's marking ability by comparison was infuriating.

F: Davey Bellchambers Kommer
HF: Zaka Gumbleton Daniher

As of know

Tall forwards Gumbleton/Crameri/Carlisle.

Play Hurley back as he is a better defender than Carlisle.

T-Bell plays for the seconds.

You are joking right?

Bellchambers has been in excellent form and you want him playing seconds? For real? Come on!

He is just starting to make himself increasingly dangerous as a forward and his rucking has been decent, taking some great contested marks, he is the leading goal kicker amoung ruckman for a reason. He is too valuable to the team to be playing 2's.

And I'm of the opinion that Carlisle is the better backman. That is why he was being toughted as AA this year and will only get better, he hasn't played 50 games yet.

Hurley needs to stay forward in my opinion, Carlisle has said that he doesn't like playing forward, Hurley has said he wants to play forward so leave it be. I thought Hurley was decent against the Hawks, ending up with 3.

You have just got to be patient with big men, we have just been lucky enough for them to come in and have a couple of really good games and set the world on fire and now expect that from them every week, they will get there and when they do and it all clicks, watch out.

2014 we will be even better and knocking teams off like Geelong and Hawthorn because of Bellchambers/Hurley/Carlisle etc.

Not joking at all.

The way the team is structured with Ryder doing most of the rucking, means that T-Bell is virtually a permanent forward - And he is not suited to that role - hence get Gumby in as the second ruck, but who is a natural forward. T-Bell did very little on Friday and in the previous week, besides kicking 2 goals, and had a limited impact in the ruck forward or back. Do you remember the last goal we got from a clearance/throw in our forward 50.

Carlisle VS Hurley - Friday night - Carlisle vs Franklin - Guys who are successful on Franklin stop him getting his arms up for marks, that means you wear him like a second skin, that means that you may lose a goal or two over the back, but so be it. And the Waite scenario - Carlisle couldn't/wouldn't stop waite's run at the ball, which Hurley did when he was moved onto Waite.

Carlisle can be a better forward than Hurley - He is a more reliable mark, but is also good on the lead.

Wow you asked to be banned!! That's pretty full on and I'm sorry to see all this shit has gotten to you like that.

I hope you're back soon ..... maybe I should get in a few cheap shots about Hooker vs Pears debate now while you can't reply!!

I'm more worried about how our forward line will line up this weekend against Collingwood. The pointy end of the season has arrived. These next few weeks will go a long way to determining the 2014 set up, as it would appear even TRB don't know the best combo yet.

At the end of the day it all comes down to continuity.

How can you expect a forward-line to operate successfully if the same players arent in the forward line every week? Watching the Hawthorn game it really looked like we lacked creativity going forward, which is to be expected when the forward line is chopped and changed every week.

The whole Hurley/Carlisle debacle needs to be sorted out asap. Playing Carlisle as a swing-man seems to have affected his defending in a bad way, and watching Hurley trying to clunk a mark is like watching Edward Scissor-Hands try to catch water-baloons.

It's just the nature of the beast that you are going to get injuries and form slumps but we desperately need to pick a forward line, persist with it, let them synergise and become a formidable unit, it's probably the only missing link in our other-wise really good side, well that and not being able to stop Buddy.
