Forward line structure

Dunell has been playing as a peel-off half back pretty much all year. If he comes in, that's the role he has to play.

Whilst we miss Gilbert, and that hand problem of Dempster is stopping him taking marks like last year, I'm hoping that Gwilt and Fisher are building enough fitness to release Rhys unless the opposition plays a ruckman forward. We just have to make do with this "monster forward" thing - all teams have them. Giving other teams the clearances each week and plenty of rebound from defence is hurting us more - and results in quality entries for the opposition (making the tall forwards appear more menacing). If Rhys can help with the rucking, then Macca can help down back.

Talls - Maister (although not sure why he played this week - if he can't run the game out then play Hickey instead) and Riewoldt

Mobile marking players - Siposs and Stanley

Smalls - have to be in form!!! We can certainly get away with only playing 1, with the other being a midfielder.

Saad, Milne and Milera togeather just does not work. At most we should have two of them, for mine it would be Saad and Milne. With Lee, Hickey, Riewoldt and a midfielder.

Another of Milera's faults is he's very one sided. Cost him a couple of times last night.

No point having Siposs as the sub.

None of them (Saad, Milera, Milne) can kick on the left. Milne manages to use a few tricks to overcome it (sometimes).

Agree with Sippa. If he's not able to run the game out, he should be working on his fitness in the VFL. With the mosquito fleet not being particularly dangerous (BTW - Milne running past for a handball and scunging someone else's free kick doesn't count as dangerous!) or able to lock the ball in, we need a hardworking half forward who can keep presenting (as the Crows had).

scores of 77,82,91,63,77,77 & 47 (GWS game excluded).
pretty average compared to last year.

3 small forwards doesn't work (Does 2?)
Hickey/Maister combo doesn't really help Roo

Newnes Rooey Montagna
Milne/Saad Lee Siposs

or

Milera Rooey Hickey
Milne Maister Saad

which looks more balanced?

It wouldn't hurt for the midfield to win a few clearance/contested possession counts either!

If we'd had one less small forward and another mid, we probably wouldn't need to have Milne running himself rugged throught he midfield and backline. I thought he did ok to be honest but the guy has his limitations.

Yep. Agree with that. I seem to remember Watters saying it was Saad and Milera that needed to develop and push into the midfield.

That is interesting because he is actually a beautiful left foot kick. I would go as far as to say that he is one of the better non-preferred kicks in the team. I think it is a confidence issue and he wants to be too perfect becuase he is worried about getting dropped if he makes mistakes.

^^^^Agreed. Milera definitely has a left foot, don't know why he didn't use it yesterday in that one instance where he shanked it. I can recall plenty of left foot kicks and he often kicks for goal with the left.

Milera fails on character, and age. He's 25 and while I'm sure he's a great bloke in real life, on the field he's a selfish show-pony. TDL and Milera are both "Graham Hick" type players - great at the lower level, but unable to bring that to the big league.

You can't judge Maister on that game - a month on the sidelines, any player will look ordinary.

The problem with Hickey isn't that it's too many talls. The problem is that if you're going to stretch the defence with two talls and a ruck-forward, it helps if he's any good at either. Hickey is not (yet, and I stress that) any good at AFL level as a forward or ruck. If you want him to learn how to become a forward ruck "all-rounder", put him in the VFL next to Kosi and teach him.

Defacto...did Lee play as a true FF last season? Or roam around more? How do you think he can fit into our current Fwd structure?

last year is was thrown around. started as the genuine full forward as a replacement to wilkes. towards the end of the year (i suspect due to interest from AFL clubs) they started to diversify him, mainly to get time into his legs IMO. spent time in the ruck, but mainly started to get pushed up the ground. time at HFF, time on the wing etc. by the time WAFL finals came around he was playing a genuine FF role

has spent time down back previously as well

my opinion is that lee should be played off HFF as a third tall and we should be pushing him to get as much miles into his legs as possible. he really does need a full pre season though and is someone that i wouldnt expect to get any return from for another 2 years.

Saad's form hasn't been a stand out so far his season, wouldn't mind sending him to sandringham for a week or 2 to capture some form and see Dennis-lane come in and see what his got, his not really used as a small so would help Milne and milera

We've seen what TDL's got, absolutely stuff all

B
We need two geniuine talls and a third option. Siposs has played his best footy on a forward flank or in a pocket. I'd also like to see Lee get a go on a flank.
Bird, can we play Roo, Lee, Siposs and Maister?

Don't know what you're seen but the guy hasn't really been given a chance! His played some desect sides Sydney, GC and essendon, playing well at sandy!

If you can get the ball to his hands he's good. But he's not massive at getting it.
Milne got 17 disposals in his first game. TDL once got 11 against Gold Coast.

I hate it every time I see Milne get the ball behind the centre. He almost always tries something tricky. Fine when success means a goal and failure a turnover in their 50. Not when success mean the ball moves forward 30m and failure a goal to them.

I noted that On the Coach last night was saying the same thing. That we have too many forwards who can not play in the midfield and this means we get overrun due to the other side having more midfield rotations.

Stunning isn't it, the entire football world can see we've got too many forwards except for our coach. Last year we had a senior midfield that could run all day so we could get away with a similar forward setup, but we don't have that this year with guys like Lenny, CJ, Goddard even Gram at times in there all out of the team.

The mosquito fleet dream is dead, time to move on.

Won't be saying we have too much forwards when rewi, Kosi, Milne retire! We got decent young guys coming through at sandy that play in the midfield! Curran (rookie), ledger, Saunders, dunnel, and mature guys that are at our back door waiting to be picked up in cockie and Michalides! You need balance in a team, and clearly that's what watterrs is aiming for!

Hayes meant that there were too many forwards in the gameday squad. ( not the list ).
It meant that our midfield was light on.
I agree, with another mid instead of 3 small forwards, 2 talls, and a resting ruckman, players like Steven and Armitage could have rested forward and been as effective as the small forward who missed out.
