with the like of fisher, cloke, hoola and possibly kreuz playing forward next year do you think we lack some forward speed in the defensive aspect, ie opposition defenders run the ball out to easily, has our young defense inproved enough to perhaps move waite forward? would this solve the problem?

I'm going to be sniped for this from all angles, but I'm going to throw his name into the discussion anyway.

Ben McGlynn.

Small forward/midfielder, can get the ball in spades, is a tough nut, extremely quick and would come reasonably cheaply as he's not looking like getting back into the Hawks team any time soon.

I'm not exactly sure of his contract status, but if we could get him I think it would be a worthwhile trade. Offer pick 56, and I reckon that may just be enough to get him.

He is very injury prone though isn't he? still wouldn't mind giving him a little look, tough little player and is quick.

Cloke won't be apart of our forward line for an extended period because he's too easily exploited. Take Cloke out of our forward line and you have an immeadiate lift in speed.

If Cloke wants to be apart of our side long term he has to lift his tapouts by 110%.

Small forwards are the key to solving the forward line problem. We haven't found anyone to replace Lappin since he retired - we need to get someone who can carry out his role up forward. Another speedster would be handy also.

If all goes right we will have Ziebell and rockliff next year and we may find our answer.

No, probably not Rockliff at our third rounder, Chris Hall (if he is still there), this little fella can play, if not him, maybe look at Charlie Sharples in the 4th or 5th round (if we use it).

Whats Corey Jones' defensive actions like? Heck if we could pick a bloke up that can kick 30-40 goals a year + lay some tackles inside 50 I'm all for it. What would the Kangas request for him? Second or third rounder?

i reckon we should go for a person likee green or mckinley
mckinley is young quick and is very acruate at kincking for goal

Green is 27, turning 28. Not a good fit for us.

Mckinley would have been perfect, and Carlton tried everything they could to lure him (even offering him more money) but was loyal to the Eagles and agreed to stay for another 2 years with less pay.

On the wrong side of 25 and is too inconsistent. Need to look to youth and build up, not just patch over what we're missing.

Speed, accountability, hardness and tackling?

Sounds like Tex to me :thumbsu:

Would hope we're enquiring about Djerrkura from Geelong, would love to get him with our third rounder.

Or if Steven Motlop is available at 40...

FWIW I recall Hoops blanketing Aaron Davey out of a game recently.

No one has mentioned little eddie betts, with all those big blokes eddie should be at the foot of ever pack, but do agree another one would be great also.

I like Grigg up forward. He is fast and skilled.

Also am intrigued with Lachie Hill - I know he is strictly not the type - but I have a good feeling about him fitting our forward line.

Does anyone know much about him?

Saw him in an Ants game on ABC late in the year.

He kicked an awesome left foot goal on the run from 55-60m out with the smooth ease of a 20m field pass.

When we rookie listed him last year he was said to be recorded a very impressive time in 20m sprint (sub 3sec?) not bad at 190cm tall.

Thanks - music to my ears!

Having defensive skills up forward isn't just about foor speed. It's about the set-up, putting yourself in the right position, and also hunger for a contest.

Kruez has a great defensive side to his game because he seems to know where to put himself, when to stop and prop and when to advance on the ball carrier.

Looka at Fev on the rare occasions he applies himself to a chase out of the backline...it's a pretty awesome sight, and more team lifting than any goal he could kick. If he was that hungry for the contest all the time he would be the most complete forward to play the game.

Betts and Fisher don't have any defensive side to their game. The addition of Houlihan won't help a lot. The lack of a genuine CHF also creates plenty of space for other teams to exploit...meaning is is often up the other end before we have an opportunity to defend our forward 50.

A permanent post for Walker on the HFF would help, and as a left fielder, I'd be interested in playing Armfield out of a forward pocket...there's a kid who loves a contest.

Eddie Betts needs to get fit for once so he can chase and run all day. Houla is on thin ice (last chance year) and also needs to be super fit.
A good small forward would be great, I would love to see Waite up forward. I think he has done his defencive apprentership as this side of his game was lacking.

If we get it right I think we will fare all right in this case but another quick would be good, a Cyril Rioli would be perfect.

No-one has mentioned Russell. All year he was bagged for not getting enough of the footy and lack of conversion (which is fair enough), but the one thing he has been good at, and the one thread he should cop some credit, and not a sighting.

HIs role this year has been predominantly as a defensive HFF. Playing a lone hand at times trying to apply some pressure to the runners coming off half back.

A couple of names that have been mentioned may do quite well.

Walker, Grigg and Hoops.

The problem with Hoops is he is very offensive and the defensive side of his game doesn't come naturally, but when he does it and works hard he can be very good. Last year he played to of his best games for us defensively - Cleaing up Davey as a BP, and then playing on McLeod as a defensive HFF.

Grigg looks to be settling in across HB and I don't think we should move him just yet. Looked very nervous on devut last year and has just got his confidence, so he should be left down back and with runs on ball to consolodate this year.

Walker is the obvious choice. My only issue with Tex is that when he came back he tended to work against Fev, and not with him, often flying for the same ball, leaving opponents on the ground to clen aup the spillage, but with some work he could do the job.

I think Gibbs could rotate into this role as well. Strong defensive side of his game, good set shot and reads the play well.

As for Betts not having any defensive side to his game............is that a joke?
