Awesome player and and a friendly, down to earth bloke. Thanks for the heads-up.

Yeah my thoughts exactly. I remember meeting him when I was in grade 6. Told him we shared the same birth date. He spoke to me for like what seemed an eternity. Genuinely nice man. More than I can say for Danny Frawley and Gary Lyon who with him that day.

Lyon has tickets on himself... he might be different with people he knows intimately but his public persona is best described as aloof. Polar opposite to Brownie.

According to the HS today Browny will tell us how he refused to attend the press conference when he was forced to hand over the Captaincy.
No hard feelings apparantly, but hard to take for him.
He was injured a bit in his last year as Captian (1998 I think) and Bucks was leading the team for a lot of weeks. My friend and I use to sit there and say to each other how Bucks was already basically Captain that year anyway. Made sense.

When watching his career, i always wondered how greater player he could of been if left on the wing.

Matthews played him everywhere to plug up holes, knowing he rarely ever got beaten 1 on 1.

A more courageous player u will not see.

His son Callum carries the same will for the contest. Watching him play reminded me so much of Brownie. Gavin Brown took the whole "more guts than brains" thing to a new level; brave b******!

I probably shouldn't of added that last line but one of the 2 in particular is a real shit bloke.

Just keep in mind I met them at scool organised footy clinic. Just some real poor form on one of their behalfs. I mention them both because they got a good chuckle out it.

Hopefully we hav a f/s of the future there. Not sure how old he is.

I will never forget brown going back with the flight of the ball against st kilda and tony lockett coming the opposite way on the lead. Brown looked to see what was coming and saw it was plugger and just went even harder at the contest.

Got cleaned up, dusted himself off and got ready for the next contest.
Truly inspirational

Brownie was an absolute legend. All of the kids loved him. I was one of the only 2 pies supporters but all the kids sensed his "aura" and as such had all the kids hanging off him. The other 2 were just filling in time.

Gary and Danny might be great blokes. But left a horrible impression with me. It was 20 odd years ago and I'm sure they've become better blokes since.

Would love another rowdy at the club. Rowdy was a freak. Could play almost anywhere. And his hardness/courage is probably the best I've ever seen at pies.

Was more than handy wherever he played. Wish he was still at pie land in some capacity. Need blokes like him in our club.

How old is Brown Jnr?
Are we keeping tabs on him?
If he has the heart of his old man then I want the bugger.
Because heart is lacking in a lot of modern footballers.
Browny had and extracted the best out of his football without being the most talented.
I will say the same about Maxy.

Must have been pretty bad for a grade 6 kid to think that

Really looking forward to this. An all time favourite player of mine, probably not considered an all time great of the game but he's absolutely a legend of our club. In the few times I've met him at events and functions has always come across as a really genuinely humble, friendly bloke.

No offence to maxwell, but brown was a far far far better player.
Started his career on a wing, played at fb on ablett, played ff in our premiership year, had jobs at chb and chf plus multiple roles in the middle. Only position he never played was in the ruck.

His body was so banged up by the end of his career

This question was probably answered at state level where Rowdy got to play on the wing in great sides. He subsequently won two "Whitten Medals" as the best player in the state games. He was a gun winger....always remember our full backs back then just kicking the ball out to Millane or Brown simply because they knew the two wingers were "never beaten".

Yes was best on ground in vic v sa in front of 90,000 at the mcg. Remember it well.

I hope we as a club can bring him back into the fold again. This bloke bled black and white.

I too met him at a school clinic at primary school. Top bloke (I think Jason McCartney was still there as well)

No wonder when you look at the size of him. He had no right to play in those KPP roles. So undersized its not funny. Yet somehow he had the heart the size of a lion to enable him to do it. Definately one of my all time favourites

Disagree. Buckley was not ready to be captain at the time. Being a great player doesn't make you a captain. Eventually Buckley grew into the role.

I think the general consensus was that it took Bucks quite a while to become a good captain. I'm pretty sure that even he concedes that.
