Reading the foxtel forums has been fun. They put out a response saying basically sure we lost the EPL but we have f1, AFL and a whole bunch of football no one gives a **** about.
I don't think they realise that unless they do a deal with optus to show matches, they are going to lose a lot of subscribers.

Just start off a convo with a Foxtel salesman you see at a stall in a shopping centre & show interest but act like you're not convinced. They can always authorize free install/connection, free channel packages included for a period of time, etc to get a customer over the line. I know they even used to sometimes have actual tickets to footy games to butter up potential customers.
Just remember they need the sale more than you need to sign up through them so even just flat out ask them for free install or whatever they can chuck in & just start to walk away if they act coy about it. It's all in the barter mate ;)

Foxtel has lost the Showtime (US network) contract.

Stan has signed long-term exclusive licensing deal with CBS’s Showtime, as the Australian streaming video on demand (SVOD) player seeks to challenge the might of Netflix in the market.

Among the new franchises included in the deal are series Billions, Halo and Twin Peaks, with Showtime seen as the major challenger to US cable giant HBO, which is aligned with Foxtel in this market.

“Showtime is one of the world’s greatest creators of television programming and we are delighted to enter this long-term partnership, cementing our position as Australia’s leading local SVOD service,” said Mike Sneesby, CEO of Stan.

Under the output deal Foxtel and Presto retain rights to existing Showtime shows like Ray Donovan, Penny Dreadful, The Affair with the SVOD rights only moving to Stan 18 months after the show airs.

The deal is the second major overseas deal Showtime and parent company CBS has made this week as part of a global expansion strategy.

It kicked off this week with the premiere of Showtime original Billions in Australia, after a strong debut in the U.S and next year.

“The growth of SVOD services internationally has created a huge demand for premium content globally. Showtime’s prestigious brand and growing portfolio of programming align perfectly with this marketplace,” said Armando Nuñez, President & CEO of the CBS Global Distribution Group.

“We’re excited to expand the international footprint of Showtime in a big way in Australia with Stan, and build on our relationship with their corporate parents Nine Entertainment Co. and Fairfax Media.”

The announcement comes as latest industry analysis shows Netflix dominating its rivals both in terms of subscriber numbers and traffic volume.

A leaked Experian Hitwise analysis of streaming traffic, published today shows Netflix dwarfing its rivals Stan and Presto in traffic while the US service is tipped to have more than 1m local subscribers compared to Stan’s estimated 350,000 subscribers and Presto’s 250,000 subscribers.

Update 3pm : Foxtel and Presto have both issued statements this afternoon.

Foxtel statement: “Foxtel has its own longstanding deal in place with Showtime and will continue to show recent hits like Penny Dreadful, The Affair and Ray Donovan first on Foxtel along with many of Showtime’s past favourites.”

Presto statement: “Presto will continue to stream current Showtime series including Ray Donovan, Penny Dreadful and The Affair. News seasons of these programs will be available exclusively on Presto ahead of any other streaming service in Australia, for the life of the series.”

Definitely be prepared to walk away too. Plenty of opportunities elsewhere to grab foxtel as its not like the only one place to get it. Not sure if its best to get it now , prior to footy season or 3 months into it for the best deals?

Those that are new to Foxtel and obviously love their AFL, the coverage of the sport both on and off the ground is awesome and worth the price. Tbh I would rather cherry pick certain AFL games to go to and watch the rest on Foxtel. At least for Victorians they get to see the major majority of the games in their home state. Outside of Victoria, you simply need Foxtel to watch the game and that of others as well.

You have AFL 360 which is arguably the best AFL show to watch daily (mon-thurs) and you have a fairly decent before and after the game previews and reviews. There is also fairly decent highlights packages of all games and you can always catch the replay of any game over the weekend or in the week leading up to the next round. There is also plenty of decent draft news in October on Fox Footy for those suffering from withdrawals.

If cost is an issue for some then do this. Sign up for 6 months contract and pay $50 per month ($25 for basic - compulsory and $25 for AFL). I think from memory you can disconnect upto 3 months max (maybe a small $5 or $10 fee for each month) and for the remainder of 3 months pay just $25 for the basic. All up you could get away with paying "only" ~$400 per year, maybe a tad less if you are astute with when you order and cancel. I know everyones financial situation is different, $400 could be peanuts to some and a major headache for others, so I wont judge and nor should anyone else.
