i moved house over the weekend and foxtel didnt get installed until monday. sunday night i was almost ready to top myself watching free to air.

that said, i pretty much just iq everything i want to see and watch it at a convenient time for me, fast forwarding the ads.

the bad news is when they installed it at the new house they gave me a new set top box and i lost everything i had saved on iq, including about 10 hours of the wire, which i hadnt had a chance to watch. grrrrr

Reading this thread there are two large Foxtel promo ads to the left of the browser...

I don't have foxtel, but I don't really watch that much TV. I'd rather use my time doing other things than investing into spending more time sitting on the couch.

I wouldn't mind having the A-league, EPL, Super 14 and domestic/international cricket available, but I doubt I'd watch most of the other channels.

This comes up a fair bit, there seems to be some belief there is a connection between lazy people or a miss-management of time and foxtel. I don't think this is accurate or fair. I refuse to believe that anyone is so completely busy or socially booked up that they don't find themselves chilling out watching tv / reading / playing computer games etc.

I live a healthy life and social life, however like people have said I think that being able to record show's and save them for some idle time (We all have it) would be great.

I go to the gym 3 week nights a week and one weekend, plus I go out with mates about 2 nights a week and I work fulltime...I still find myself with plenty of time to lie around and watch crap tv (I'm sick of it).

The question is therefore:

1. Can you afford it and then;
2. Do you consider it worth it over normal tv

1. Do you think there are people in society who would be better off if they spent less time watching TV?

2. Do you think that having foxtel is more likely or less likely to increase the amount of TV one watches?

Fair or otherwise, having access to dozens more TV channels is going to be unhealthy for some people. There are always going to be people who say 'I'm spending $50-100 a month on it, I better get a lot of use from it'.

That's nice. All that and you find time to moderate the Fremantle board on Bigfooty! ;)

The real question is what impact will subscribing to foxtel have on your TV viewing habits (& life in general)? Will you watch the same amount of TV but enjoy it more because you're not watching re-runs of farmer wants a wife? Will you watch a bit more? Will you have a dozen new shows you 'have' to watch every week? Will you pass on joining that indoor soccer team because you spent your entertainment budget on fox?

You sound like you've got a balanced life and are happy to shell out however much to have foxtel on hand when you want to watch TV, good for you. Plenty of others in society will shell out to have foxtel instead of going to the gym or out with mates, and that's not particularly healthy.

So you would like to have stuff but don't because YOU fear YOU would become a big fat couch potato?

The point is, some of us like the access and very rarely watch it (am hardly in the country - although slingbox is a godsend) but we like the option. I mean I have a fair bit of wine stored in my house, doesnt mean I drink more than if I only had 1 bottle. Just there for when I need it.

The game you are trying to play - insinuating that no Foxtel makes you somehow a better balanced individual - is bollocks. Maybe you are just a tightarse who saves $80 a month by denying himself shows he would sometimes like to watch.

Its a service, it has some good content and some exclusive and interesting content (i.e. the sports you listed). It also has 3 AFL games a week not available on FTA. For $80 a month, or so, its chump change for the convenience.

I don't have it because I wouldn't get much use from it. Difficult concept to grasp, isn't it? I don't get the paper delivered either (because I don't read it). Perhaps I should ring up the West and arrange that in case I want to read the paper sometime.

I'm hardly in the country, I've got a large wine collection, $80 a month is pocket change... Yep, reads like an Eagle87 post.

Foxtel is a service, and parts of it are very good. Given how little time I spend watching TV I doubt I'd use the service much, so I don't have it. I guess that means I'm poorer than Oliver Twist and in fear of obesity...

Hurt your feelings again did I...

You were the one running the argument that its unhealthy to have Foxtel and also that you have more fullfilling things to do. I was simply pointing out that its a service, it has some good product and those who like that product can acquire it without the need for an evaluation of their inner selves... You yourself like some of its product but choose instead "use my time in doing other things than investing into spending more time sitting on the couch" ...

Nice to see you playing the "holier than thou but condescending at the same time" card as always... you and Mr Q should really get a room.

.... and $80 a month IS pocket change ... surely you don't think its much? Public servant?

Again? Remind me of the many, many times we've crossed paths... I generally don't mind your posts as you make some good points on footy and other topics, even if you are a big-noting, condescending prat.

If you read my original post you'd see it said 'I don't have foxtel, but I don't really watch that much TV'. There's not much in the way of TV programs and sport I desperately want to watch, so consequently I don't watch that much TV, and find other things to do. Not difficult to grasp really. If having foxtel ensured I could watch say every West Coast game live in season 2010 then I'd be on the phone now...

I made the arguement to sabre about foxtel being unhealthy because he disputed the existance of any link between lazy people and pay TV. If you don't think there is a potential downside to some people in society having access to dozens more TV stations then you've got rocks in your head.

Yep. Me and Mr Q, we're like two peas in a pod. You've got me worked out to the letter.

Nope, I don't. If I was earning a low wage and supporting a family I might, but then I'd be a poor person and clearly not engaging yourself in conversation.

Public servant? Ha, not quite.

I think I agree with you to some extent..

Take someone that already watches allot of tv and give them foxtel and it will likely cause them to watch more..

However for someone who watches a normal amount of time (Has a normal amount of downtime), I don't think that foxtel will cause these people to watch more tv.

My main point was that we all have down time, some choose to play computer games, some read, some watch tv. No one is that socially popular that they are out of the house at all time every day. So how you choose to spend that downtime is completely up to you.

Plus I think people too often draw a conclusion between tv watches and weight gain, thats a very dated impression. I know people that can easily watch up hours upon hours of cricket, yet are the fittest people I know. Weight gain is far more complex than painting a "watching too much tv brush".

I am of the opinion that geting foxtel will maximise my downtime, broaden my horizons and give me other options.

The one problem with Foxtel is its too damn expensive for the content they deliver. Go to Europe or the US and they pistol whip Foxtel.

Local content, shits me to tears, if West Coast are on free to air why are they on Foxtel as well, this stems from the restictions placed on Foxtel by the AFL & WAFL. utter bollocks and total narrow mindenenss. in my mind, goes against what cable television was designed to do - Give choice.

The channel 7 agreement killed off the Foxtel AFL channel and the quicker channel 7 is torpedoed into oblivion the better.

All in all, FTA is a redundent medium and better quality is available on Foxtel.

Interesting that one of the concerns is that people waste quality time lying on a lounge watching foxtel when they could be spending their time a lot better outdoors -

as they sit in front of a keyboard posting how unhealthy it is

Yer but I only want to see non FTA Hawks games so last year it was about $150 a game.
Not interested in Ice Hokey or Grid iron or Rugby or any other sport

See I love EPL. The amount of coverage fox sports gives is awesome, couldn't ask for much more.:thumbsu:

I like Fox8 and Hits aswell. TV1. Get to watch some classic comedy on those three.

4 games live per week and all games replayed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. If you've got iq and the HD package it's awesome.

News, weather, sport, history, discovery, nat geo, BBC Knowledge, Music Max, VH1, Lifestyle, Fox Classics, W (for Law and Order).

The sooner channel 7 and One HD is broadcast through foxtel for everyone and not just those with foxtel cable the better.

Like others I will generally just record what I want to watch onto iq (unless it's live sport) and watch it when I want and zing through the ads.
I like being able to use the series link to record a whole series and then watch it in one or two sessions.

A few questions about how Foxtel is set up, i see there are various package groupings.

1) There are two movie packages, which is better or are they that similar that you might as well have both

2) Why do they package three of their music channels with Kids channels, with due respect i love my music but i do not care for the kiddy channels.

3) Why doesn't Foxtel just charge you for the channels you want rather than grouping them up

4) Any chance of them getting MSNBC

Apart from probably a year, I've had pay tv, be it Australis/Galaxy (which went bust)Austar or Foxtel since its inception. They gradually took some of the good channels that were once included in the basic package and bundled them up with mostly rubbish so that if you still wanted it, you had to pay extra.

If they charged people only for the channels that they actually watched they'd be stuffed, lol.

I've heard ads on the radio today, when they launch the new channels on Sunday 15th they're finally including channel 7 on 107 for non cable subscribers. Yippee, about bloody time.:D
