David Hyde Pierce, who portrayed Niles in the original series, opted not to return for the sequel. Grammer said previously that Pierce’s absence as Nile forced the revival’s storyline to go in a different direction, but in a good way.

“In a very funny way, it just took us to a new place, which was what we originally wanted to do, anyway, which was a Frasier third act,”

As long as he doesn’t sound bitter about it. 😂

Watched the new eps. The first one was average because the chemistry between the cast was not there and the humor felt forced. The second one was better. Hopefully, it will improve as we get used to the new cast members.

I was hoping this would be a gritty sequel series where he uses his psychiatric skills to track down a sick serial killer taunting him on his radio show, but I suppose that's not to be...

Unless my script gets greenlit 😜

Wonderful news as I adore Rodney The Plonker and Only Fools and Horses.

Really looking forward to this new series tbh.
Also in a nice little show called Goodnight Sweetheart, where he was a time traveling polygamist, sort of.
His new character was the best one in the new Frasier by a big margin IMO.

I agree, the second episode had some lol moments.
The canned laughter really stood out on the first ep as well.

Officially out on the new series.

The old magic is gone and it's really sad to see Kelsey struggling against a mostly younger cast.

Not even Rodney from Only Fools and Horses (who is always great) can save this mess.

I didn't mind it, think it grew into itself over the course of the first season. Is it back for a second season soon?

Agree. I enjoyed it.

Yeah first couple of episodes are out now I think.

Revival I watched season 1. Didn't watch season 2. Having Frasier be Oprah level rich & famous and getting a job at Harvard wasn't a good idea. There's more comedy potential if his post original series work life hasn't been smooth sailing and he's teaching somewhere much worse than the elite university he went to. Reeked of nobody who created/wrote the original series was involved so they were doing whatever Kelsey Grammer came up with.

Yeah, I didn't love it. I only made it through a few episodes. It wasn't awful or anything, but I still have more fun with any episode from the original series. Speaking of which, am almost finished my 4th full run through (plenty of other one off episodes I've watched more). Still as brilliant as ever.

The original's premise was just "rich, successful guy who loves opera and wine lives with his father who loves sports and beer. Is occasionally visited by his even more pretentious little brother".

If this one stunk (haven't actually watched) it wasn't going to be fixed by Frasier not being successful.

He was famous in the original series but it was local famous because he worked at the radio station. In the revival he's gone on to more fame.

Those are just superficial details though. The actual premise was about a new start on many fronts, midlife crises/getting older and searching for love again after his divorce. He was still deeply insecure about his past "failures" and being a phony. Financially he was well off, but there were continual existential crises. Similar for Niles, who in fact had to grow into a real and empathetic human on several levels, and follow his heart. They both had to repair a fractured relationship with their very jaded and depressed father.

There's a couple of surface-level parallels with Frasier wanting to reconnect with Freddy, but the dramatic tension and source of most of the comedy simply isn't there - not in the same way the original was set up.

It doesn't make it a failure of a show, but is one central reason why the magic wasn't quite there. Frasier was righly a lot more comfortable in his own skin and with that a lot of the humour wasn't going to be there. That and the chemistry of the original cast.

Which is exactly why having him teach at a community college probably wouldn't change much. Great shows (which the original was) go a long way beyond their basic premise.

And really, your final sentence probably answers it all.

If Freddy and the other younger characters had both compelling narratives and incredible actors (I mean come on, Grammar and Pierce in the original was practically cheating), it may have worked better. It could have been cool to see Frasier and Niles together in that later phase. But the interesting and hilarious dynamics were always Frasier-Martin, Niles-Martin and Niles-Frasier. That wasn't ever going to be replaced. The inner turmoils weren't going to be recreated. And nostalgic references will never have the same magic as the simple nostalgia/charm of putting the original episodes back on.

Remakes or revisits rarely work. Scrubs has just about pulled it off, but few others have.

Yep. This is spot on. Sad, for the fans who simply would love to watch the characters forever, but it just wouldn’t be near the same level the original seasons produced.

I know Kelsey and Peri will rightfully get their flowers for reinbahiting Frasier and Roz but shoutout to Bebe Neuwirth she has not lost a step with age every bit as funny as she was on Cheers and Frasier and refreshing for a woman in Hollywood to not bow down to cosmetic surgery pressures.
