Free agency what are our thoughts, will it help the RFC or will it hurt us?

Is free agency a way for the RFC to improve our playing stocks given we havent got rid of our debt or will it hurt us with the stronger clubs poaching the better players?

Will free agency lead to the abolition of the salary cap as those tw terms are not compatible.

If that happens what will happen to the poorer clubs, can the AFL in this post GFC1 and perhaps GFC 2 be able to support the struggling clubs. ?

Andy D in his speech yesterday warned that the player demands might hurt struggling clubs is this a percussor to the future.

Its interesting that in Jon Ralphs article not one Tiger was listed.

Will the richer clubs find a way to get around the salary cap ala carlton.

lets face it the AFL is turning a blind eye to this it seems.

That is because the average age of our list is 12. Free agency will not effect us till 2025 when Deledio reaches pubity. Maybe we can resign Troy Simmonds for another year and 4 games so the other clubs can poach him. I think our young players can learn a thing or 2 off him and he'd be a walk up start to our leadership group.

stop taking the piss , this is for SERIOUS discussion.

I think free agency will be of benefit to sides on the cusp of success. The only way I can see it helping us would be if we managed to lure someone like Judd who can single handedly change the culture within the playing list as he has done at Carlton.

I think if we recruit to many players from other clubs it will stall the development of our younger players as it did when Wallace and Miller brought in players like McMahon, Graham etc. Having this happen could cause our younger guns to think about leaving to play in a successful team.

IMO the financially rich teams will be rubbing their hands together more than the struggling teams and if the salary cap is pushed out then the stronger teams will be able to hold on to their players easier and then pinch other clubs players to top their lists off.

I think it will hurt clubs based in non traditional footy states more, the want to return home after so many years service will hurt teams like Brisbane and later on Gold Coast & Western Sydney so in a way it could blow up in the AFL's face in 10 years time.

It might also be a huge benefit for teams like Fremantle and West Coast in trying to lure home the Western Australian footy players too.

In Victoria, Collingwood would be utilising it as much as they can to keep them at the top. Carlton and Essendon will be in the thick of it too, just because of the financial lure and large supporter bases they have that will attract players from other teams especially if they are near success.

The Adelaide teams, I think it will just reinforce the need for these teams to keep producing home talent. The biggest concern for SA footy isnt free agency, its ensuring that they remain viable and that their own competition keeps producing SA footy players.

I think Richmond should be ok as long as we keep investing in this area and have the financial backing behind us. We have one thing goign for us and thats our large supporter base, we are still perceived as a sleeping giant.

I have grave concerns for teams like North Melbourne and Melbourne though.

At the end of the day, money talks.

Initially, it should help us.

We (should be/hopefully will be) viewed by potential recruits as having good facilities, and being 'on the up', so they'll want to join us, and because of the young list ( and with the FTF, I'd hope we'll be paying front loaded contracts ), we should have plenty of cap space to get players over the line.

Longer term, it'll play to the bigger/richer clubs. We just have to hope we can get rolling soon so we can get up there before it's too late.

Those two teams are no different to us...the only thing in our favour is that we have slightly more members...

My understanding is that free agancy will benefit all clubs, all clubs that have money that is.

Hence Gale's strong push to get us out of the red.

If the salary cap is enforced then I dont see a huge advantage.... Apparently Judds Visy deal would be deemed inside the cap now.
