Danny Stanley is a political prisoner.

This is sadly ironic, given Danny himself certainly takes no prisoners.

The reasons for this grave injustice are murky.

Some speculate he's been frozen out by the player group, who are seething with collective jealousy at his thunder-thighs and his incredibly manly glutes.

Others yet suggest Mick is just going for epic lulz.

In any case, join me in supporting this brave, young trooper, and wishing him a safe journey back into the Collingwood side, where maybe one day he can assume his rightful place as Inside Warrior.

Stanleyites, ho!

When the selection committee finally comes to its senses, and Stanners takes his place in the midfield during the home and away season, the carnage will be biblical in proportion.

Artist's interpretation below:

Gents (and ladies), hear ye our battle song. Set to The Cure's A letter to elise:

Oh Danny, it doesn't matter what you do
You know you'll never get selected from the two's
To play midfield and star
The way you should

The way you would slot right on in
If Mick only would
If Mick only would
At least we'd lose this sense of sensing you would help
immediately
to clear the ball

and play a part
with bullish frame and massive heart
and all the tackles your hands can make
but Mick just sees that you win many BOGs
And then looks the other way
Oh he looks the other way

Like throwing faces at the sky
Like throwing arms round
Licuria
Mick stood and stared
Wide-eyed in front of you
And the face he saw looked back
As if you wanted to
Say "hey Mick!" who else can clear a ball
The way I do

Danny believe we never wanted this
We thought this time he'd keep all of his promises
We thought you were the mid we always dreamed about
Mick let the dream go
And the promises broke
The hope is running out...

(I know what you're thinking - The Cure for a battle song? Is he mad? But doubt not, fellow Stanleyites, this is precisely what Danny would have wanted. You see, like all the misunderstood greats that have passed before, he too is a true renaissance man. He yearns not for thudding beats of war drums, but for soft, melodic rock. Yet another layer of intrigue in the infinitely-pieced jigsaw puzzle that makes up the great man.)

Amen!

Much credit to Stanley for continuing to dominate despite being given a raw deal at the selection table. I struggle to think of another player on our list who has done as many hard yards and shown as much fortitude.

It's safe to say that Stanley is being held back in fairness to opposition teams, giving us the opportunity to test the rest of our list in competitive matches before we activate Danny and commence Operation: Cakewalk.

Someone needs to create some Che Guevara-esque Stanley t-shirts!

STANLEY IS THE PROMISED ONE!!!!!

I've been trying to brainstorm reasons why we might choose not to play Stanley in the NAB cup, despite plans to play him Round 1 and onwards:

-We already know how good he is, so wanted to use the NAB cup to let the real fringe players battle it out for the remaining spots in the side.

-He is our secret weapon and we want to retain the element of surprise against our unsuspecting Round 1 opponent, who will never have heard of him (this likelihood was mentioned by a poster in another thread).

-He has diseases and must not mingle with the senior team until he's well again.

-He has some type of injury that is too severe for AFL but not too severe for VFL.

-We want our VFL team to start the year with some winning form, given that they didn't go so well last year.

So yeah I couldn't really think of anything believable, but I still have a pretty good feeling about Round 1, I think he might just be selected.

You forgot "Stanley is so unbelievably awesome at AFL football that we didn't want to risk ruining his mojo by subjecting him to ridiculous experimental NAB Cup rules". :p

As funny as this will sound bare with me.

The incredibly soft rules of the NAB cup may actually be an issue to danny's game style.

Danny goes at the ball hard, hits the body hard, and runs in straight lines. Playing in the NAB cup may of actually been more detrimental then good for him, as he would of been constantly giving away frees, for stuff in a regular H&A game would be play on.

Like i said far fetched but possible

Long time reader first time poster!

Can I just say that I signed up purely to jump on board operation 'cakewalk'!

I mean what does this guy have to do?

All you Victorians should get t shirts made and march down to the Lexus Centre.

If anyone is willing to shout me the airfares and accommodation, I'll do it too :)

Like most supporters ive only seen him play a few games... i have no idea if he's any good or not despite him getting some high possession at vfl level. How many games at afl level has he played? From what i remember he looked rather slow! Afl is a big step up can he hack it??

We need to unleash all the power of Danny "Dr Manhatten" Stanley on our poor unsuspecting opponents. At the moment he seems to have been banished to Mars.

So you watched Watchmen eh kirby lol

I dont know how a blue tinge would suit danny tbh

and I hope he displays some modesty but covering up the unit.
Agreed, but horses are hung like danny stanley

lmao

Reflections on injustice - an ode to Danny Stanley
He's real keen on the footy
but so mean to his man
He's been a legend in mothballs
Since his career first began'

He's got the tank of a Sherman
And a heart set in gold
He checks men, then he blocks them,
Then turns their skills cold.

Stanner's foot skills are balanced
And he loves a sly goal
And he could lob a long handball
Through a sparrow's bum hole

So come on Mick Malthouse!
Give our Stanners a go!
Stick him right in the middle
And watch Magpie eat Crow.

like many have said....and i have said a number of times....Danny needs consecutive weeks at senior level. Atleast 3-4 games.

He'll take a while to adjust to the pace. But he'll put his head over it. And he'll win clearances.

Give him matches...and then also give him gametime.

I am with you. Let him have a few games to settle in after all he has not had the luxury of playing any games with the mids and it could take a few games to click but when it does I am convinced he will not disappoint.
Join me up I will be there.
Maybe a March past Lexus is in order too. With posters with the new slogan "Free Danny Stanley"!!!!!!!!!! Who knows where it may end.

After our performances in the entire NAB cup in clearance situations, it's clear that Stanley must be played. Not only played, but played in the centre square. And not only played in the centre square, but playing in the centre square for consecutive matches.

you realise every time we have played him in a senior game he looks second rate?

He has terrible awareness and a lot of trouble adjusting to the tempo of AFL football.

He is there for depth/worst case scenario. Given the number of mids we have picked up he is lucky to still be on the list.

Barham is a much better prospect. Goes in like a mad man. Has extremely good pace. Very good tackler. Good disposal. Massive engine.

I'm a fan of Stanley as I've seen what he can do when he has played for our VFL team.

We have an obvious weakness in the team for clearance players, and thats exactly what Stanley is, a clearance player. While he hasn't exactly set the world on fire with the limited opportunity he has been given I still believe he can make it if he is given time to adjust.

We have nothing to lose by playing him, we get smashed in the clearances anyway, so if he fails then we havn't lost anything, but if he translates some of his VFL form into AFL form than we might actually win a couple of clearances.

Many people thought Toovey was hopeless, me included, but he has been persisted with and now looks like he could be something.

Also pressing for the Stanley case is our younger midfielders such as Beams, Sidebottom, McCarthy, etc are not ready to fill the clearance player role.

Nice effort. :)

I was thinking we could use this pic from Snag, in which he has the longer hair and the somewhat visionary stare. :D Might look better if it was mirrored so that he is looking left though...

We need someone who can extract the ball, Stanley can extract the ball.

2 and 2 together...

Beams and Sidebottom look the goods in this department too, but they don't have the experience (even if only at VFL level) and size (in Steele's case) of Stanley as yet.
