French's load eases
25 December 2005 Sunday Herald Sun
Jackie Epstein

A ONE-man ruck show for three years, Barnaby French finally has a support cast.

The addition of Dylan McLaren via the pre-season draft has suddenly made the Blues' big man stocks look healthy.

Chris Bryan, Ian Prendergast and Adrian Deluca are also part of the ruck division, along with rookie Daniel Batson.

"There's a good rotation of big men now whereas we were struggling for a couple of years to have too many guys over six foot four on the field," French said.

"Dylan's come in and he's got a lot of enthusiasm and they're going to give him every chance. Chris Bryan did well last year and we've got four or five now who can hold down that position. It's pretty important to have a back-up ruckman in case one or two go down. So we've got more depth this year for sure."

French said the Blues ruckmen were reaping the benefit of having former Footscray and North Melbourne great Gary Dempsey at their disposal.

"It's the first time I've had a ruck coach since I've been here," French said.

"He's got a lot of good ideas and for a 57-year-old he still holds his own and does a bit of competitive work with us. He's got good experience and a good bloke to have around."

French, 30, had a troubled start to the pre-season with a minor flare-up of the serious back injury he sustained in Round 9, 2004.

He has been voted again into the leadership group of seven, along with Anthony Koutoufides, Matthew Lappin, David Teague, Cory McGrath, Nick Stevens and Prendergast.

He expects Koutoufides to remain as captain and anticipates exciting things from him on the field.

"He's been terrific," French said. "He is looking red hot at the moment. His physical appearance is second to none. I reckon he's looking the best that he's looked since I've been at the club so I'm really excited thinking about him playing this year."

Young players who have impressed so far include Jordan Russell and Justin Davies.

"Physically you can see that (Jordan's) put on a bit of weight and his training has been outstanding," French said. "Justin Davies has been training the house down. He's someone we really need up and firing."

After his wedding on Friday at Naracoorte, South Australia, French will return to training optimistic about improvement for the season ahead.

He believes he has a big part to play, but is happy to share the load.

"I'm happy for a young ruckman to come up and stick their hand up and really start playing well," he said.

"It's just going to bode well for the club. I've been here three years and we haven't really had much success so I'm all for team building."

yep hope with Dempsy our ruckman will be better of in 2006 :)
it will be interesting to see what happens for the first half of the H&A
NAB Cup is our Future AFL Players without that were would the kids learn to Play in The AFL ,

Lance not in the leadership group but Teague, Prendergast and McGrath are?

Happy for Teague and McGrath who might still make it but Prendergast just doesn't fit into our side anywhere that I can see.

Good to hear about Russell and Davies, although top-line performances in January count for little. I still wouldn't say our ruck stocks are great though - having lots of mediocre ruckmen doesn't count for having one or two good ones...

That said, French has impressed me and I reckon he might develop into a top quality ruckman at some stage. I rate Prendergast too, a versatile player who works really hard, who can hopefully repay the faith we've shown in him, by leading our young guys and setting an example with his work ethic (if not his skills) that they can follow.

Did you mean someone else by French?

French is already a top quality ruckmen and is somewhat coming to the close of his career.... probably another 3-4 years left in him.

Damn, just checked the Carlton website and you are right, French is 30! I always thought he was young, like 24. He's not a top quality ruckman, though - solid, useful, and will be better with a bit of support this year. My main point was that having heaps of mediocre ruckmen doesn't equal one good one, which is even more the case given French's age...

Everybodys opinion changes, but in my opinion french will be better with McLaren around, French has worked solo for 3 years and now with some help he will benefit alot.Happy new year to all the carlton fans on bigfooty and have a safe one, see you all in 06

I disagree I think he was absolutely brilliant in the first 5-6 rounds of the season, in the top 3 ruckmen in the league around that time for sure as acknowledged by many others.

Then he had that injury and struggled to regain that form again but if he can get another full pre-season and do some solid training with Dempsey there isn't any reason why he can't be a top shelf ruckman in the very near future; after all Spida started to hit his career best form around the same time too.

No way is French anywhere near the best 3 ruckmen in the league. If we were offered a direct swap for any of the following, we'd take it in a second:
Dean Cox, Adam Goodes, Rhett Biglands, Josh Fraser, Steven King, Jeff White, Michael Gardiner, Luke Darcy
But as I said, French is very serviceable, and if he can string an injury-free year together could be a very good player. Not many players peak after 30 though, although Dempsey could be of assistance

You are spot on. Up until he got injured he was 3rd on the list of effective hitouts behind Cox and Everitt and 4th in total hitouts. He will probably never get the recognition he deserves, but certainly Carlton are a better side when he is up and running, than when he is not. His importance to the fortunes of the side should never be underestimated.

I never said he is, I said he WAS up until the first 5-6 rounds in the season as also proved by the stats above. How are you to know he wouldn't have been able to sustain that top form for the rest of the season if he hadn't got injured?

If we were offered a direct swap for any of the following, we'd take it in a second:
Dean Cox
Yes
Adam Goodes
Isn't a ruckman anymore.
Rhett Biglands
Hahaha, good one.
Josh Fraser
NO
Steven King
NO
Jeff White
Yes
Michael Gardiner
No chance in hell
Luke Darcy
Maybe
