I need some help with a saying that was in a message I received last night.

Friends in need are friends in deed.

Heard this numerous times but never quite understand what it means.

So if anyone can enlighten me I would be grateful.

Oh, received the message as someone needed a lift but I was unable to oblige due to already having a car full and couldnt fit this person in.

Real friends are those friends which are around when you need them.

i.e. Friends in (times of) need are friends indeed.

But is it fair for someone to use this saying after you have already told them that you made arrangements with others a week or so ago. Then being told that they were hoping to get a lift from their friend??

This person just seemed to think that I would cancel prior plans so that I could accomodate this request.

Would others cancel plans for someone else that needs a lift somewhere even when there is plenty of public transport going past where they live which will take them to the place they wish to attend??

I would help out any friend if I can but I cant be in two places at once and only have limited room in my car.

The gap between ''in'' and ''deed'' suggests some forethought and says to me that the person was disappointed in you and wanted to say that its not what friends say but what friends do thats important to them

I would piss them off :)

You sure? Because the saying has always been used with the meaning i ascribed to it as far as i know.
Well you're dead set wrong.

"A friend in need is a friend in deed" basically means that a person who needs a mate to do something for them will be indebted to them. ie: Owe them.

Thanks guys.. Im still not cancelling plans with one group of friends to assist another..

Had the guilt trip thrown at me and Im not biting. This person is more than capable of walking 10 minutes down the road or catching a bus. Tries doing it everytime I have other plans or tells me that I have been ignorant by talking to others and not spending all my time socialising with him.

So thanks again for your help guys.

Interesting thread, I always thought it was 'a freind in need was a freind in deed', meaning that they need your help they will be your freind for a long time, but lifes experience has taught me that the 'freinds in times of need are freinds indeed' works all the time, think about it, if this person is now not your freind because you didn't give them a lift were they a freind at all?
