Since when has this been a "rule"? As far as I know there is no such rule in the book but happy to hear otherwise. Why is a player automatically penalised if they run backwards with the flight and make contact in a spoil?

Quite simply:

No eyes for the ball + Body contact = free kick.

...If you are running with the flight, it's very hard to have your eyes on the ball.

I actually don't know if it's a legit rule or just an interpretation, but until the last year or so, AFAIK it has ALWAYS been paid.

Has always been paid as such, if you have your eyes on the ball your obviously going to be running backwards with the flight, which wont be paid. But to run front on you pretty much have to look where your going, meaning you have eyes for the player not the ball.

It's against the rules to push, bump or block in a marking contest, unless the player is legitimately attempting to contest the mark, whether in the front, side or back.

Clearly in the rule book and always has been. Also read the spirit of the laws, which is intended to be read alongside the rule book.

Firm, front-on contact without looking at the ball (ie. not a legitimate contest) is always going to be classified as at least a block, but usually signalled as a push. (Most umpires won't attempt to classify the severity/difference between a push, bump or block and will just signal as a push and pay the free kick. The classification is all academic in the end.)

Last night there was one beetween Anthony and Thornton Anthony was front on and Thorton was holding his arms because Anthony had got in a better position, yet Thorton got the free kick for front on. All in all I reckon the umpiring was pretty dam good both ways anyone agree?
