Due to injury, form issues of established players and now the emergence of new young players.. I don't think anyone really knows who are our best options in the backline anymore. At least we now know we have options and depth there. Right at the moment.. the only automatic pick for me would be Williams if he was fit and firing. Brown, Marsh, Frost, Keefe, White, Howe, Goldsack, Toovey, Sinclair, Maynard, Ramsay, Langdon, Scharenberg, Oxley, - throw a blanket over them! The spots are there to be claimed by those who put their hands up. Frost and Howe are doing just that at the moment.

Yeah that was silly, but if I'm naming our bottom 3 today he's in the mix.

I'm confident we have something with him the thing is he makes U12 type errors and is playing in the worst possible role to make those errors.
Yep I agree mate, he probably was bottom 3 today but I just hate hyperbolic comments made by posters such as legend status who imply they have no good qualities ( noting the kid is 19). Gets my goat and we just had a great win too.......still......I'm smiling :)

Amazing how much better our backline and ball movement looks not only with Howe down back, but without Langdon slowing down and kicking it 50m backwards or sideways every time he gets the ball.

This.

Maynard and Smith are worth persisting with (Maynard until Marley is back). Really good upside with those two.

I think I tend to be somewhere in between the "he's a wrecking ball beast gun" and "he's a total spud" camps on Maynard. Defensively today he was good. He tackled so well and got some fantastic spoils in. His decision making and skill execution can be absolutely ordinary in patches. But he's young. I don't think he is ever going to be a star back man, but he could be a good part. In terms of where he projects as a player I think Josh Hunt at his peak is a good comparison.

Reckon Howe is in our best 22 backs on current form.

Absolutely! A lot of people were making the call that our biggest need in the back line was a rebounding half back, but in my mind it was a third tall that could defend and rebound by equal measures. Langdon lost that role when he lost his mojo and then got injured. I think Howe has just sewn it up. If he can keep producing that consistently, that is a huge thing for our team. We looked so composed with him back there, and far more productive from kick outs with him and Reid taking the duties.

Defenders that didn't play today v Cats 2016.
We are a better team without Langdon. He is slow and takes too much time to make a decision.
Sinclair while I'm starting to rate him his kicking will always be suspect.
Ramsay very good one on one. (Will improve us.)
Williams I'm unsure. Good one on one on his day but wouldn't mind seeing him move on the ball.
Brown maybe a better team without him, doesn't seem to win his own ball enough.
Keeffe should've been delisted.
Marsh shocking kick can't see him making it at senior level in this team.
Scharenberg should he come back from 2 ACLs could be handy but pushing shit up hill now if he does happen to do another knee it might be over.

The fact that so many of us are slotting Howe into our best back six on the back of three games shows just how incredible he's been down back. We haven't had somebody with elite intercept marking ability and elite kicking skills since 2011 Ben Reid. I had no idea he had such a sweet right peg. He just flushes them, some absolute laser beams today.

For the record, hard to go past:

Williams - Brown - Ramsay
Howe - Reid - Adams

But I have absolutely nothing against Frost, Tooves, Sinclair, Varcoe, Smith or even Oxley floating through there at this stage.

Then we have Scharenberg waiting in the wings! Things are looking up.

Tooves turned back the clock a little yesterday I thought.

Great post Kirby. He laid a perfect tackle on my side of the ground that made me stand up and applaud.

Truth is I thought our defence had a great game on Saturday. It was great to watch.
