Great post. Playing a mix of inside and outside was what made him so dangerous in 2010 - could win the clearance, but could also link up through the middle or push hard forward for a few goals a game on occasion. Maybe Lyon didn't initially think that was his strength, maybe after the leg break it was something he simply could not physically do, or maybe the emergence of Neale as the inside mid enables Barlow to play a different role. But if he can capture that 2010 form, it only makes the midfield much stronger than it ever has been

I think you are right in that it is a combo of he is finally back to true peak fitness, and Neale can replicate his inside work but is too short to play outside...so logrolling the strengths of both to create maximum value.

I thought what has happened with our tagger is exactly what Haselby was suggesting; a more attacking tagger rather than a pure negator. It is more that the wise decision to get a fringe player in C Pearce to play that role rather than a key part of our midfield has been made, thankfully. Barlow at his best is taggworthy, although not in a team featuring Fyfe, Hill and Mundy.

It bothers me that there is no one in the footy media who actually analyses teams the way they should be analysed.

For my mind, the move of Lachie Neale into Barlow's role (I didn't mention the increase in stoppages attended etc) is a massive contributor to our two wins but nary a mention in the media. Coaching masterstroke. Actually listening to the Herald Sun footy podcast and one other (can't remember, might have been On The Couch) they actually praised Barlow specifically for his inside work. Watch the game, look at the stats. Dude's playing outside and loving it.
agreed, and i mentioned something similar in another thread here recently.
there's a huge gap in the AFL media for intelligent, critical analysis. compared to just about every other sport, it's a bit of an embarrassment really.

Yeah but did you see in rd. 1 when that Carlton bloke hand balled straight into the umpires head? Lololololol.

Yes they are very impressive.

Meanwhile in the real world, I also enjoy staring longingly at the 'Golden Table' ...

The last time the Eagles defeated a team who officially finished a season in the top 8:

Elim Final, Eagles v North Melbourne, 9/9/2012.

The last time the Eagles defeated a team who officially finished a season in the top 8, away from home:

Rd 15, Eagles v North, 7/7/2012.

The last time the Eagles defeated a team who officially finished a season in the top 8 and wasn't North:

Semi Final, Eagles v Carlton, 17/9/2011. (Edit: Actually - Rd 22, 2012, Eagles v Collingwood, 25/8/2012).

The last time the Eagles defeated a team who officially finished a season in the top 8, away from home and wasn't North:

Rd 14, Eagles v Carlton, 26/6/2011.

The last time the Eagles defeated a team who officially finished a season in the top 8, away from home and wasn't North or Carlton:

Rd 19, Eagles v Western Bulldogs, 8/8/2009.

(Thanks to Bender 571 for pointing out the discrepancy).

Needs to go in the banter thread. Both of them.

Wow those are some impressive stats! Seems they've been on a slippery downhill slope a lot longer than most people realise

Robbo read your post.

Lachie's starting to get noticed: http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/a...dermott-brereton/story-fni5ezi5-1227306782403

But the one thing that must be understood at clearances is that there is a difference between a clearance and a first possession.

Someone like Neale can win the first possession deep inside the pack, feed the ball to a Mundy, Fyfe or Barlow closer to the outside of the pack, then they break free and get credited with a clearance.

Neale’s number of first possessions was 26 in the three weeks of NAB Challenge. The next best Docker was 10.

Add to this, when Neale gets first hands on the ball at a stoppage the clearance rate is 85 per cent. That is phenomenal.

This kid is an “inside” machine and he is still only 21 and yet to play his 50th game.

Just quietly in 2012 WC defeated Collingwood(4th) in rd22, Geelong (6th) in rd20, Freo(7th) in rd 9 and Hawks(1st) in rd 4. All at home though.

Oops my bad.

Not sure what happened there.

Thanks for the correction, I have edited my post accordingly.

West Coast the Eagles have taken 175 marks in the two matches to start the year... ...how many would you expected their premier ruckman to have clunked? Come on Nic Nat! Don’t give Garry Lyon any more ammo! You need to get off the mark this week.

After 3 games, Freo has 3 players the top 20 players in the AFL for contested possessions: Nathan Fyfe (1st), David Mundy (9th) , Lachie Neale (20th). "Yeah, whatevs, Sydney have 4" I hear you say. But, wait...

If you list those 20 players in order of disposal efficiency, you notice something interesting.

20th - P Dangerfield 54.3%DE (=14th in Total Contested Possessions) "Oh, 54.3% is pretty crap, maybe Danger is a bit overrated" I hear you say.

19th - D Swan 55.8%DE (7th in total CPs)

18th - M Rischitelli 56.6%DE (16th in CPs)

So you've noticed at this point that some elite players have pretty average DE%, but you excuse that because they're earning a lot of their own ball. But you keep going up the list until you hit the top 5...

5th - D Beams 71.6%DE (3rd in CPs)

4th - N Fyfe 72.4%DE (1st in CPs)

3rd - D Hannebury 74.2%DE (18th in CPs)

2nd - D Mundy 76.4%DE (9th in CPs)

"Wow" you're thinking, "we have 2 in the top 5, Cool! Look how well Mundy is using the ball this year. That's a really good number for an inside player 76.4%! Nice work Dave"

But then you have a look at the DE% of the next bloke and you spit coffee all over your computer screen...

Don't say I didn't warn you...

Seriously, put the coffee down...

1st - Lachie Neale 90.9% DE (20th for total CP)

No, That's not a typo. Of the elite Contested Possessions winners, our boy Lachie is the best ball user by the length of the Flemington straight.

Dermis's article is an east coast conspiracy to keep the brownlow out of the west. Now the umpires will notice Lachine and the votes will be split between him and Fyfe!!

Is that a portmanteau of Lachie and Machine?

I'm actually surprised Lachie is only 20th in contested possessions. I thought he would be higher up that list.
Probably because WC don't know how to put up a contest.

Those stats are awesome though. I wouldn't expect that kind of DE from anyone in the league, let alone an inside mid.

The numbers – 17, 8, 2932, 648539 and 3 - are all related to what event?

The last time West Coast scored 100+ points against Fremantle.

17*: Derbies back.

8: The number of Western Derby (WD) centuries racked up by Freo since then.

2932: Days elapsed since then (14/4/2007).

648539: The number of spectators who have witnessed WD’s since then.

3: Present day Eagles who have played in a WD in which West Coast scored 100+ (Hurn, Priddis and Rosa).

* Second longest active streak. Only Sydney keeping Richmond below 100 points (23 games) is longer.

BTW, that week:

John Howard was Prime Minister.

‘Mr Bean’s Holiday’ was no. 1 at the Australian Box Office.

‘Girlfriend’ by Avril Lavigne was no.1 on the ARIA singles chart.
