Furies Grand Win
By Berth Mertha
Punt Road - Fighting Furies broke a 1 year title drought after 6 years of final football appearances when it beat West Coast Wonders by a margin of 62 points in what appeared to be a one sided match in the SFA Grand Final.
The Fighting Furies came second in the regular season standings with 8 losses to secure second place, and confirmed their rating as one of the best team in the SFA with Saturday's historic win over the battling Wonders.
"We were the best side all year and we thoroughly deserve this," Furies midfielder Heartbreak Kid (HBK) said.
Furies became the first team to win 3 SFA premiership title when they eased to victory in front of a crowd of 457,620 adoring fans at the Punt Road Oval.
The Furies dominated the match, outscoring Wonders 6.6 to 2.4 in the first quarter, before kicking five goals in the second quarter to build a handy 39-point lead.
Furies were on top in every aspect of the contest, with their defense - which has been one of the best in the competition all season - keeping the Wonders to a relatively low score for the grand final.
"Thankkk you fur hanggggging aroun and supporting the Furries and being soooo pashent, It's been a loong time but we got thereeeee." Captain/Coach PHX slurred in his post-match press interview.
PHX said it was "fair" his team, which now boasts 3 Premierships, had succeeded in winning another premiership in this era.
But he was adamant that this would not be the Furies last roll of the dice with this group.
"We probably felt that it was only fair that we won another one," PHX said.
"There was a lot of pressure from everybody expecting us (to win), saying if we choke this match like the GF match of season 5 it'll not be good enough.
"I've been quoted as saying that, too. That's not to say we can't win it again next year and that we won't be trying to win it again next year and our run is over. It's clearly not.
"We've got BILC and HBK, and Equus is young, Hougie is young. The real challenge is to keep this team alive.
Furies Hougie was named Man of the Match. Hougie, who kicked one booming goal from 70m and finished up with 34 possessions and 10 marks, began the season in a slow fashion before ripping up the competition in the second half of the season.
The Furies have appeared in six final series, winning 3 premierships and 1 runners up in the past 8 seasons.
