Who do you think will be the future of our backline? Clement and Wakelin have been wicked players over the years and great servants of the club as has Presti but they are all getting on in years and although they will wtill be good for a few more years to come they will retire soonish. Who will pick up the slack when they leave? and do you believe we are in trouble?

Well Presti is only 27 so he has a fair bit of footy left in him. I believe clement can go for another 3-4 years, he is only 29. Wakes is the worry he is 32 next year. In answer to your question i list the possibilities below:

Harry Obian: Watched him in action this year the odd games he plays and he has composer, doesnt crap himself when he has the ball and has a good size on him, no dought he will part of the future back line.

Nick Maxwell: Needs to learn to play shoulder to shoulder with better fowards, but part of the back line no dought.

Nick Davies: Can play of half back, and he has shown he has dash and could turn out ok, we will see what he can do next year

Chad Morrison: 27 but i think we should try him down back.

Dane Swan: had the ball on a string late in the year of 2005, could be a good prospect.

;)

Either Chris Tarrant or Travis Cloke will move to CHB, IMO.

Otherwise, we're looking at players that aren't with the club yet. We'll be drafting a tall defender or two at the end of the month.

Except for the person to take over from James Clement. Nick Maxwell has got that covered.

I can see travis floating back if he have troubles in the back line, i have read that Tarrant will move to the wing or through middle when his knee is better and we have rocca back

Can't see Taz moving back but is it time to bring back Jason Cloke? I agree with you Fade away with Swan. What about Johnson, should he be played of half-back or in the midfield?

Well, i graduated highschool and played football with Ben Johnson for our high school team for 2 years and he is my size which isnt very big so he is not a key position backman. Plus he made it very clear in an interview he HATES being put down back, he wants to play in the middle. So Mick has set him the task to become fit enough to play there, same task he set Holland a few years back. I expect to see johno to play more around the middle in 2006.

BEN Davies wont play backline if he slots into the lineup again

Chad Morrison was played down back already this season gone and didnt really succeed

you are right with Swan though, he will be a back pocket type for us for a few seasons to come

Nick Maxwell will take Clement's role in time, Jason Cloke is about to replace Wakes, with any possible draftees also coming through to fill that void

Sorry people, i meant Ben Davies, but as for Cloke everyone was giving mike crap for persisting and having him up forward, but if you noticed towards the end of the season he started being offensive and taking some grabs which he never used to to. I think that this could come in handy when defending, rather than being one dimensional and just spoiling all the time, learning how to take position in the back line is critical...perfect example...clement and wakes... :thumbsu: :thumbsu:

I think that our backline is also getting older, but still has that performance gear in them. Clement and Wakelin have continually been great over the years, and there most recent year has been close to their best. Prestigiacomo is consistently doing a job, and i guess can stay still young. Maxwell is a great prospect and has shown more improvement and more toughness each game. Our running backman are not bad. Lockyer, Johnson, Swan, H Shaw, R Shaw. Also don't forget Tristen Walker who has been kept on the list, and sure there is plenty of improvement left. Some might say the same for Hall.

He has size, He has played there, He has alot of strength, the question is, is he capable of being a key backman, rather than a utility?

Well, like you said his size is his key asset! We need a big backman! Hopefully he is our answer. What do you think of Harry Obrian lonie? Im really interested in your opinion of him..i think he is very exciting

Yes, but he is still a rookie listed player. I like him, but as a player, he is a worse Dane Swan. Ben Johnson will come back and play while O'Brien is just a player who needs work on. More of an experiment, but great to see him have some games under his belt.

Julian Rowe....needs to improve and bulk up a little. he has some promise.....i call him "turn over" when he gets the ball...needs to concentrate on his kicking

Can Jason Cloke play a KP role in defence? I don't think he is big enough to be KP, but that is just my opinion.

At the moment I really wouldn't be worried about our backline because we have too many defenders as it is. Shane Wakelin, James Clement, Ben Johnson and Simon Prestigiacomo will continue to play good football, while Maxwell, Swan and R. Shaw will continue to improve.

This area is good in the short term (depending on whether Wakelin makes it past 2006 which I think he'll play on in 2007) in the long term it's looking a little shakey. Maxwell may be a fine young defender but would need to bulk up considerably to take on key talls as he is only 190cm (Clement's height), best to play him as the mid defender, the role Clement gets. Clement could spend his last years at CHB/FB more with Maxwell and maybe O'Brien coming through in his spot. Walker has the tools to become a great CHB except the smarts, so it's not looking so good in that area, but there is hope. Hall may be a chance, but if he does make it it will unlikely to be in the backline.

Travis Cloke could play CHB for a year, kind of like Brad Miller did. This won't be permanant but could help his development as a CHF, playing on the best CHFs in the game.

In my opinion, our defence has been our best unit for the past two years, and was again a key part of our revivals in 2002 and 2003. While it is aging, it still looks the goods for the next year or two.

Ideal Collingwood Defence: 2006

B: Wakelin, Prestigiacomo, Clement.
HB: Johnson, J.Cloke, Maxwell.

*This also includes Rhyce Shaw on a wing, or even as an onballer, while Ryan Lonie must be used as an attacking wingman.

We do have a good defence, however, with the retirement of Wakelin looming large on the horizon - possibly even at the seasons end - we have to prepare an extra tall or two. Maxwell will be a good future key defender, while Harry O'Brien has a huge future in the game, be it as a negating CHB or as an attacking defender. Jason Cloke, however, is an interesting one. After his amazing 2002 season, he has slowly dropped off to the point in '05 where his position on the list was in jepody. Thankfully, he has found his way out of the cellar and into the team. If he can continue to show his terrific determination, he still, I believe, play his role at CHB, however, he must play more accountable football. Dane Swan may also end up a good footballer, but may find himself just out of the starting 22 against Adelaide. I'm not sold on Brent Hall as yet, while Chad Morrison will struggle to regain his place.

I am surprised we did not chase hard for Sydney's Jason Saddington, who was a very good footballer prior to his knee injuries in 2003 and 2004. Carlton got him at a bargin price of pick 52. Don't be surprised of Saddington stars next year.

What surprises you?
All you need do is just listen to what MM says.
We are going for youth, not recycled players.
He has said that publicly several times.
What part of that don't you understand?

We are trying to get rid of fringe players not pick them up.

Our need for a tall defender is exaggerated. Wakelin will only play another season or two at which time Maxwell and Clement will take whoever they are most suited to while Presti holds down FB. We will definitely need one or two a few years down the track when Presti and Clement give it away but that's a way off yet. Meanwhile we have no rucks that have ever won more than a handful of times at senior level between them and our midfield is slow and poorly skilled as well as old.

I don't mind taking a tall back if he is best available but if we chase one in the draft I'll scream. That's a recipe for more mediocrity on the list not to mention that it doesn't solve our pressing problems. I'd much rather make do with Presti, Maxwell and Clement down back with C1 and Harry as options than be forced to endure a midfield of O'Bree, Lockyer, Rowe, Egan, Yakka and co backing up Holland and Johnson as our front line midfielders when Buckley and Burns go. We must get 2+ midfielders with real talent and we must realise a team needs a ruckman not a stick insect with a broken stick.

Harry O'Brien does look a lot like a young Mal Michael with his kinda gangly awkwardness, very raw.MM was just like that early on and he has filled out to be a force to be reckoned with so here's hoping..
