Da Blues!
I was just thinking about our 'new' midfield, and how it might develop in a couple of years into a really good outfit.

Pagan was right when he said that we didn't have sufficient depth to help Kouta & Campo in the 'engine room' (an area that Carlton has really prided itself on in the past), and when you look at all the good teams going around, especially brisbane, they seem to have outstanding midfields.. And players who can step up in rotation and when there are injuries.

So our midfield goes:
Kouta - Its hard to see Mr Magnetic Hands turning into the dasher 2000 again, his role under Pagan this year was the 'in & under' player in the absence of Ratts. & he did it pretty magnificently too.

Campo - Got belted around a bit last season, and with some support should lift and give more of those arrow-straight runs and piercing kicks in 2004.

Hulmey - Was a bit injured at stages, but played alright with usual courage and grit. You can tell that Pagan loves him, and he should step up as well with more quality players around him.

Houlihan - The best kick in the side isn't explosively quick, but has good evasive skills. I reckon he's being groomed in the Campo role - provide a bit more run, and get his hands on the ball because his skills are so high (remember that goal this year against essendon from the boundary - with a wet ball?). I remember walls saying once that Carlton has a high regard for him, and once he develops the tackling and one-percenter side to his game he could potentially be a brownlow medallist. He should be in the action a bit more this season.

who we gained:
David Clark - Does he remind anyone else of Brent Harvey? Really quick, but doesn't have such a good kick. Pagan loves taking these project players from other clubs and getting the best out of them, so he should be a really good player in our side that hasn't got a huge amount of pace.

Harford - Again, it would be great to see Pagan get him going again. My eyes nearly popped out of my head when I read that he was only 26, seems like he's been around for decades. In his prime he is a very good midfielder, though he has fallen away in recent years. Should be handy for added depth to the midfield.

Johnson - Havn't seen much of him so I don't really have anything.

McGrath - Not sure if he will be used in the forward line or if Pagan will try and develop him into a midfielder. In the Michael Long build of footballer.

The kids
Davies - There's pretty big wraps on this kid, though he hasn't really shown that much in his few games.. I don't think he's that quick, but hopefully with game time (and time in the big city!) he should develop into a really good midfielder.

Campbell - This kid is pretty quick, but theres not much of him. Pretty much same goes for all these kids - given game time they should turn out good.

Kade Simpson - Surprise late pick up in the draft last year, everyone is looking at him to be a really good footballer... When he puts on some kilos that is. Can kick pretty well on both sides of the body.

Potentials
Pick no.2. - Will most likely be a midfielder I think, Silvia, Tenace, Walker, or in the unlikely scenario, Cooney. Could almost walk straight into the side, although with huge wraps on whoever it is they might take it a bit slower - a la Jarrod Waite in 2002.

Nick Stevens - The icing on the cake. Will provide the Blues with 3 stars in the midfield, and will be a brilliant addition in the side, which desperately needs more hard running ball carrying players.

If some of those other players step up and help out the top three, and provide actual rotation to give those guys a rest, we should see a huge jump of improvement in this area next year. And hopefully amongst those kids a couple of new stars are lurking...

thoughts? arguments? corrections?

Geelong supporters seem to loathe him due to his shocking disposal. They say he's the worst player in the league - apparently they've never seen Anthony Franchina in acton. Clarke's disposal can be improved to an extent (and why not), speed cannot. He's also pretty fit from what I've heard, and from that I think he's worth the gamble. Look at where Fevola was at the end of 2002... and look at what he has become. If Pagan can do a quarter of that to Clarke then I will be a very happy man. He's young too, which makes it even better.

I fully agree with the rest though... Clarke and Harford both have question marks however.

Quoted from SurreyBlue in Jonny McCormick thread:

"Camporeale Scotland Stevens (Probably preseason draft pick2)
French Koutoufides Hulme
I/T: from Johnson, McCormick, Clarke, Harford, Tenace(probably no2 pick), Davies, Campbell, and Simpson.

Waite, Houlihan, Lappin and McGrath will also get run in the middle via the forward line.

Looks much better this year."

lol. Said everything I did in about 1000 less words :)

Johnson & Scotland will be the ones to watch, they certainly have things to prove to their old clubs as they basically left due to the fact they could get regular game time. They are IMO, the best of the new guys we just nabbed.

And Houlihan in the midfield ?? No chance, he's way too soft for that. He's better suited to serving tea & scones in the Social Club, less pressure and responsibility.

LOL Sheik. I guess there are some comments about certain players that are pretty hard to retract. At least you are consistent with the Houla stance but .... really he was much much better in 2003. Maybe he should have gone from a 'out the door' stance to a '50/50 proposition' stance?

Agreed. Scotland and Johnston are exactly the sort of players we said we would recruit. They both (if my Hawks mates are to believed about Johno anyway) have excellent skills, but just couldn't get enough midfield time to cement a spot. Neither of them are fast, but with Stevens, Campo, Simpson, Tenace and Clarke zipping around them it probably won't matter.

Harford will be good for us if his body is right. He has struggled with injuries recently.

Clarke - a fast player with poor disposal is has got to be a better option than all the slow players with bad disposal that we just delisted. If his disposal can be improved we'll be on a winner. If nothing else can be used as a tagger and will have to pace to go with the quicker midfielders the way Hulme/Davies couldn't this year.

Houla - can go back to being a mercurial but enigmatic forward flanker now if needs be. Think I would prefer to see Lappin moved back to the forward line (just to make opposition defensive coaches nervous), and Houla to stay as a HBF because his disposal going forward is first rate. May need to improve his defensive game a tad.

McGrath - I've never rated him. Essendon fans say his vision and decision making is appalling. Happy to see what Denis can do with him though.

Hulme - IMHO will stuggle to keep his spot next season with so many midfield options for Denis to choose from. Hulme is also allegedly on of the few "dissenters" who survived the clean-out. May receive the Manton treatment for his troubles next year and be condemned to the VFL before being delisted/traded next year.

Simpson - we now have the luxury of keeping him in the VFL for another year while he packs on muscule. Shouldn't have been played last year IMHO.

Davies - most likely of last years midfielders to come on. Is a bit of a tough nut so if he applies himself I can see him muscling out Hulme because his disposal is much much better.

Campbell - has missed his window I suspect.

Just on Corey McGrath, a few of my essendon mates rate him pretty highly as a zippy half fwd flanker and has played accross the half back flank also...loves to take them on and break the lines. Wouldnt it be great to see him take up Matty Lappin's role on the half back line and see Matty back in the fwd line? surely a possibility -
Ah the thought of Skinny at the feet of Fev, Lance, Angwin, Diggers and Fisher makes me pretty happy... the problem is that Matty has been pretty bloody good across half back of late
