I, and I think many of you, were looking at our current crop of "younger" players as building towards a premiership in the not too distant future. I also saw a group of players with the potential to be genuine A-graders, All Australian level players. To me they were Guthrie, Caddy, Christensen, Motlop, Menzel and Vardy. There may be other names to add to that list, Duncan and Murdoch come to mind, and maybe Vardy was a bit of stretch. Either way we now have significant injuries to several key youngsters, and there is every chance it's going to stop us from being genuine flag contenders this year. But what about into the future, how does these extended lay offs damage these players developments? At the moment, with a very large dark injury cloud over Motlop, only Guthrie appears to really be on track to become a super star of the competition. So when 2015, 16, and 17 roll around, are we going to be just short of a flag because our stars aren't shining quite as much as we would have liked?

All of Duncan, Bundy, Motlop, Guthrie and Caddy will be genuine A-grade stars within 2/3 years.
I have zero doubts on that.
Likewise I have zero doubts that with some luck a side comprising those players will be Premiership contending.
I also rate a few of our draftees from last year, I see enough in lang, Jansen, koloabc and toohey to expect atleast 1 or 2 to become genuine players.
With players like Murdoch, Simpson, Smedts, Menzel, Vardy and Kersten along with "veterans" like Selwood, Hawkins, Stokes, Harry etc I would think we could build a damn good team.
Will we rival the great 2004-2011 team? Unlikely, but there is enough there to expect success in time.

I have no doubts, apart from Billie Smedts, that all those players will be guns. My question is with serious injury set backs to a lot of these guys will their development be slowed and how much will it hurt us in 2-3 years?

Yes in short.
It will stymy their development but development is a time/experience factor and not age. Guys like Motlop and Bundy don't really have what I would consider career/development threatening injuries, Vardy and Menzel do and those 2 players are unlikely to reach the lofty heights their talent suggests they are capable of, but in saying that only Menzel showed anything in the AFL and what he did show was his footy smarts and not aerobic superiority so I would think, with some luck, we won't lose much output in the end from him, just time instead.
Vardy is the only one I have worries about because his injuries directly hamper his strengths, his mobility. But time will tell with him.

Smedts I'm unsure on albeit for different reasons.

I think Billy Smedts may surprise us this year and deliver the goods, provided CS gives him a break (I hope CS hasn't written him off already). The kid has talent but is a wild boy.

One thing is certain - if Smedts transgresses again during 2014 his AFL career will be finished.

Completely agree on guys like Caddy, Guthrie, Bundy and Motlop becoming genuine A graders (Menzel and Vardy dependent on injuries unfortunately :().

Am excited for the next 'crop' to be given their chance-think guys like Simpson, Thurlow, Murdoch, Burbury and Schroder may surprise this year (am hopeful anyway ;)).

With Smedts, I remember him being a 'favourite' of CS, so unless he's fallen massively out of favour, I think he'll be given a chance.

add Kersten, MCarthy and Hamling to your list of those who will hopefully shine if given a go, injury permitting once again.:thumbsu:

Seems a lot of our youngsters 'could' be anything if some decent luck in regard to injuries falls our way

2017! We have to wait THAT long? I demand something sooner. :)

that's crap. He should at least have as many as Michael Tuck!
Yeah, I'm pretty confident Joel will have a very long Tuck-esque career, and will continue to get better and better like Corey Enright.

I'm sure Joel will make a better contribution in grand finals than Tuck did late in his career:

1984 - 8 possessions and a goal vs Essendon
1985 - 13 possessions vs Essendon
1986 - 10 possessions vs Carlton
1987 - 15 possessions vs Carlton
1988 - 10 possessions in a 96 point smashing of Melbourne
1989 - 11 possessions vs us
1991 - 10 possessions vs West Coast

Look up the word "passenger" and there's a picture of this bloke.

I hope you're right, but the bloke is a little to fearless for his own good! Love your avatar. I hope Enright gets into modeling when he finishes football.

Got a feeling Mackie will still be there come 2017.

This would be a brilliant Bay 13 post. MICHAEL TUCK - SEVEN TIMES A PASSENGER!

Thread title is completely wrong though.
They weren't all premiership years.
I know, I misquoted winty's stats and now I look like a total dickhead. Good thing I don't care about the opinion of Hawks fans.
