What are everyone's thoughts on jockeys gambling on horse racing after yesterdays crackdown. I don't have a real big problem with jockeys having a bet on races they are not involved with but when they start betting on other horses when they are involved in the race that is extremely dodgy.
Loved this quote from Paul Hamblin who put on 3225 bets in a 12 month period, including 33 horses in races in which he rode another horse.
"I would rather see my horse win than the horse I backed. I did it as a moz. It was a way for the horses to get beat. If I had something on, they usually get beaten".
Other findings out of yesterday included:
NINE jockeys admitted to a collective total of 4468 bets.;
RIKKI Cartwright was charged with four counts, including one of betting on a horse other than the one he rode;
COLIN Dean was told to seek counselling for what chief steward Des Gleeson described as a "gambling problem".
SEVERAL jockeys were unaware it was against the rules of racing for jockeys to bet;
HAMBLIN told the inquiry he presumed it was OK for jockeys to bet when he saw a steward in a Queensland TAB agency;
SIX jockeys were hit with fines ranging from $750 to $1250 for their betting activities.
