What are everyone's thoughts on jockeys gambling on horse racing after yesterdays crackdown. I don't have a real big problem with jockeys having a bet on races they are not involved with but when they start betting on other horses when they are involved in the race that is extremely dodgy.

Loved this quote from Paul Hamblin who put on 3225 bets in a 12 month period, including 33 horses in races in which he rode another horse.

"I would rather see my horse win than the horse I backed. I did it as a moz. It was a way for the horses to get beat. If I had something on, they usually get beaten".

Other findings out of yesterday included:

NINE jockeys admitted to a collective total of 4468 bets.;

RIKKI Cartwright was charged with four counts, including one of betting on a horse other than the one he rode;

COLIN Dean was told to seek counselling for what chief steward Des Gleeson described as a "gambling problem".

SEVERAL jockeys were unaware it was against the rules of racing for jockeys to bet;

HAMBLIN told the inquiry he presumed it was OK for jockeys to bet when he saw a steward in a Queensland TAB agency;

SIX jockeys were hit with fines ranging from $750 to $1250 for their betting activities.

Personally I'd have no problems with a jockey backing a horse he's riding.
Huge issue with him backing another horse in the same race.
No integrity issue???

Simon Marshall was on radio this morning saying jockeys dont need to bet because they get a sling,told some story about Packer giving him 10% of his winning bet.
The jockeys here are hardly household names though,doubt they'll be on the end of too many $10 K gifts.
If they feel they are on a good chance,let them back it.

Having said that,I dont see how the size of bet is relevant or buy the "I wasnt aware" defence for a minute.If it's against the rules.....so be it.

They get a sling in big races yes but your average jockey doesnt get anything more than the 5% they are entitled to under the rules of racing. That said, most of them are on a pretty good wicket and I wouldnt have though they would need to bet. Agree that backing their own mounts should be ok and certainly should be allowed to bet in races you arent riding in. Plenty of them do it anyway, they just get someone else to place the bet for them.

He is a smart man. I do it many times myself, also for footy tipping!

A jockey backing his horse sounds fine, but there's no way in hell people can keep a regulatory eye on every single jockey...you'd always have more than a few betting on another horse.

It's impossible to stop jockeys from betting, so why bother trying?

Interestingly, many of the big betting jockeys of history have died broke. Jim Pike was a good example.

A smart punter takes advantage of every edge he can get in the battle against the market. A mug punter will lose, no matter how much "help" he gets.

A crooked jockey will not win on the punt unless he is a smart punter. Some of them wouldn't know how to win a bet if they were riding every horse in the race.

What an absolute fist full of crap. A moz! Does anyone in a sane world believe that they have any control over a result due to the fact that they have backed a team or horse? A straight do not pass go do not collect $200 passage to the looney bin.

For that jockey to claim that he must think the stewards are stupid. A Moz???? Give me a spell.

Why does it happen so often then? If I tip a team, sure enough it will lose.

Well you're tipping the wrong team. How can a jockey honestly say that he will ride to his full capacity if he knows well and good that he's going to profit more out of letting another horse win that he has money on.

Corrupt!

I would encourage jockeys however to bet on their own ride. This way they are going to try harder as they have their hand earned wagered on it also.

To differentiate between the 2 examples and more importantly police it would be a nightmare, so they should ban it all together IMO.
