Game day thread, Hawks v Dockers round 21

This was the match that we had to win and the boys came together and did the job .
Taberner I have to say played his best game for us and finally showed everyone why we recruited him .
He held his marks , used his elite running ability and took won some very good contested possessions .
Silvagni played the game with poise and commitment and combined with Johnson and Dawson like they have been on the park all year .
Sutcliffe Man O Man how much has he improved this year . He may have to get a bigger belt to hang all the scalps he has and will take this year as well as in the future .
Gee haven't we missed Mzungu's running and Son Sons foot skills both at kicking goals and his elite passing .

I have to take my hat off to our ruck coach for getting Sandi and Clarke to improve their ruck tap work because this was the area that has been hurting us for the last couple of months .
Just so you understand why I'm making this comment its because Sandi started doing the double handed tap earlier in the season but lately went back to his old habit of just getting it to ground at the feet of our midfielders or when he got frustrated the big thump into space .
The double handed ruck tap was beautiful because he was directing the ball into the hands of our midfielders and we were winning more centre clearances .

Now I'm going to make an observation that some may not like but Lachie Neale on that performance needs to go back to Peel and play his way back into our best 22 . His turnovers by hand and foot where not good and he did it all day .
Clarke needs to go back to training and find the accelerator pedal that he is missing .
He is one paced and when he needed to find a bit of speed it wasn't there .
This is the reason he has failed as a forward IMHO . He can't get separation from his opposition defender and so he is too easy to keep out of a contest .
That being said his rucking improved today and he has a big tank but too often the opposition beat him to a contest and then easily ran off him .

Bit harsh on Neale. Didn't have the best game (I actually thought he'd be subbed during the game) but one bad game doesn't automatically mean he should be sent back to the seconds. However, if Ballantyne is back next week, then somebody has to make way. Might be Neale, but could also be Duffy (who'd be stiff given his TOG).

But I love him..

Hey I love Elvis too, but when was the last time you saw him move as freely and run as hard as scos did today.

Scos did better today than luke has in the last few games. Let Luke rest as long as possible, then bring him back when we need better closing speed down back.

Closing speed is snos' only weakness. Body-on-body he has been as good as Luke this year, if not better.

been saying it all year, love Neale, Sutty, (cant think of another young player that has a spot in finals), but there gonna get smashed come finals, hope we bring in the big bodies. Although Sutty really is a footballer, he's building which is what real footballers do this time of year

SCOS's disposal is shakey at best, see if he builds, his kicking isn't bad for distance, just his passing makes mcpharlin look like hill

Balla for Duffy is an easy call, how does Ibbo get a look in now? Ant take Tabs off, him and Walters free up Pav no end.

Maccas kicking lacks depth, though both him and silva are a bit up and under. What has swung me to Silva is that Macca pushes the holding/interference envelope a lot These days and the umps are aware of it. Scos on the other hand has tightened up on his frees against column where he used to crash and bash his way over the opposition.

Best game I have seen this season. Awesome game.

If you had one quarter to show to someone new to the game to get them to show an interest in footy and in Freo it would be that second quarter.

Honestly didn't believe we were capable of that but very happy to be proven wrong.

In all sincerity, people talk a lot of crap about footy and fans and the game etc. That's part of the joy with it all, I guess.

But with a match like today, if people can't appreciate the spectacle that both teams put on, well I imagine there 'aint much joy in their lives.

Was a great game. Exciting. High scoring. Full of great individual efforts. Sure, we lost but it was a cracker game.

What a like whore.

Absolutely spot on though, that kind of attitude reminds me a lot of tennis and how (some) people can't appreciate how amazing Fed/Rafa/Novak are because of some petty grudge or nitpick.

Good matches are good matches, what can I say?

Sutty is firmly best 22, IMO, buddy status notwithstanding. His run off half back is a key to a lot of our slingshot plays and his kicking us superb most times. Despite his smaller body, he holds his own against his opponent most of the time, albeit with assistance from the rest of the backs on occasion. Had Mundy kicked the goal last week, we would be singing Sutty's praises for that beautiful pass that gave us the match winning goal.

The only thing I'm worried about in the future is the idea of him being "typecast". Doing such a good job down back he get planted there, we've all seen what he can offer in the forward half. This is a guy I want racking up the pill and delivering inside 50.

Similar to Fyfe's GF people cast their minds back to one or two particular errors earlier in the season or in his career and point to that as evidence of disposal flaw. He's a ****ing ace kick and everyone needs to acknowledge this by now. I watch him more closely than most other players, I know this :thumbsu:

Said tonight when we were watching the game, that I couldn't say who has better disposal, Sutty or Hill. Hill's probably got him covered, just. But, Sutcliffe definitely has elite disposal.

I'd give it to Hill too because his technique is quite simply sex but they're my top two as well.

Ballas. Lukey, Ibbo, Suban, Deboer, Pearce..... Mora, Apeness..... all could play a part in September for FFC

We bat deep - this is where the last 2 games will be interesting - everyone will be going 110% to ensure they lock their spot

Neale had a bad game. It happens and we won, one bad game does not get you a demotion to Peel.
Clarke's problem is that he does not do the hard work early. He seems to wait until he is sure the ball is coming to his area, really needs to 'want it' more and his game will improve immeasurably. For mine, Clarke's form if found can take us to the promised land.

There were more signs today than there were in recent weeks for Clarke that's for sure, showed more of a willingness to hit the contest and even take players on with the ball occasionally which I don't mind so long as he's acutely aware of his own limitations.

I hope we can keep the "drop Neale" posts this week to a minimum, tad reactionary.

We will need players with speed for the Brisbane game so I would not consider any changes . But with a 6 day break the following week we need to be mindful of our last game of the season before the finals against Port .

Suban , Ibbotson and DeBoer will be pressing for selection in the Peel game this week . We need to be mindful also that Peel will not be playing finals so the training track is where these players will need to impress the selectors .

What was with the crowd today, looked pretty full I guess but only 35k. Bit low considering was a GF rematch?

Well done to Freo! I think this shows what I've been saying for most of the year..Freo vs. Swans for Freo to take the chocolates in the Big Dance IMO. You guys will eat up the Cats anywhere you play and I think the Hawks however talented and gritty are basically cooked. Great game!

I'd still be scared of facing your guys at the MCG, you still have quality to come in and you always seem to kill us with your spread at the G. Good luck and see you in September!

No love for Walters' disposal??

Why Taberner? He will get subbed out after 4 possessions and zero scoreboard impact in the 3rd. God I hope I'm wrong but I just don't get it.
