Analysis Gameplan

I don't even buy that we don't have the cattle to pull of the overlap run, handball and kick game. Michallaney/Cook/Cumming/Milera/Dawson just to name a few can all pull this game plan off. Rash and Rankine can both play this way through the midfield with their speed and skills in transition too. Nicks just doesn't position them in a manner to do so.
Yeah but people seem to forget we are playing another team of very skilled players too. It’s not just about who we have, it’s equally about who our direct opponents are also and where they are setting up. You’d like to think our game plan could compete with a team like Bulldogs, which it did. A couple of things on the night go our way (2nd Butts goal) and it might have been different. But it’s a long season and we have some tough teams to start with.

Apparently we have decided to revert back to quick ball movement game plan from the beginning of the game this week, so we are a chance.

Thoughts 1970crow ?

Gees you know it must be shit when Club Ambassador who does cartwheels to support the club is criticising the game plan.

Who from here called 5AA about it? Obviously someone given they referenced that’s the way we’ve been training.

I doubt we have the players with the vision or skills to execute a fast kick/mark style. I’m sceptical, but Laird out and Nank or Cumming into the back 50 would help.

We have scored more than the opposition when having fast ball movement... whereas the opposition have outscored us when we have moved the ball slowly.

At least it was good to hear today we haven't taken a month this time to realise the slow movement game plan is a loser one.

No doubt, I just don’t think the players have the required mindset to attack unless the win is about to be out of reach. B

The question is whether we’re going to be taking risks and being prepared to go forward to one on one contests or whether he thinks we can just do what we’ve trained all summer, but faster.

How do you explain most of last season then... until the last month. We are more than capable if we decide to. It's instructional not decisional as was made clear at today's presser.

If you compare games we have won v lost the evidence is telling which plan works better.

Same for this year when we have switched up in games.

The problem with our short kicking game is that we have players who will ALWAYS take the safe option. They will also chose to BE the safe option. The combination of this leads to slow sideways and backwards and clearly telegraphed switches. This then lets the opposition defence set up.

Brisbane at their best used a short-medium kicking game which either pierced through defences and moved the ball forward or got it in the hands of their good users to break lines and kick aggressively. We lack that gear in our kicking game.

We need to mix up the depth and speed of our movement and mix it with some run from behind and aggression so that we’re not predictable. The last weekend reminded me of the waning years of Neil Craig with our slow switches and tempo footy. Yuck.

Most of last year we weren’t trying to copy the lions style of quick kicks that open up play. We trained a different style over summer where the dare to run and carry was deleted in favour of precision kicking. If we bin what we trained for all preseason, then we can return to fast footy. But if he thinks he can just fasten up the precision kicking strategy, then I’m dubious.
