As far as i understand, usually when you play at resolutions higher than 1080p then GPU is really stretched. I have a 1060 6 GB one and i can play all the games comfortably! i am considering buying a desktop but i dont stay at home that much! so i am just wondering if an I7 ,7700 HQ for a laptop performs worse than that of a desktop?

yeah resolution is definitely one of the biggest factors re performance, but as long as you're not expecting to run games with every single bell and whistle, a 6GB 1060 should be fine for a while i would've thought. again though it depends how important different settings are to you, like AA or draw distance etc.

your I7 7700 will definitely perform worse than the equivalent in a desktop, but whether that makes much difference to the games you play i couldn't say. i think it would make sense to keep your laptop, play whatever you want to play and see if the performance is acceptable. if not, it's shopping time!

Spent about $3k on a fully sik Toshiba Qosmio gaming laptop back in 2010.
Within 2 years it was hilariously obsolete so couldn't do much gaming on it at all anyway.

Would get hot as shit and crash and was so stupidly bulky it was a nightmare to carry around.
Having said that it's lasted me till now, despite becoming monstrously slow. It's done bloody well.

Always wanted to build myself a semi-decent desktop PC so will be keeping a keen eye on this thread.

I recently somewhat completed a ~$2000 gaming rig for July. If anyone wants help, more than happy to lend some pointers like Gold Member has done.

I spent weeks doing research before pulling the trigger on this.

Went with the following;

Very happy with it so far. Boot up times are around 10 seconds with the SSD and it's nice being the first into the game when servers change maps when gaming. I haven't updated my BIOS yet so my RAM is still running at the default lowest speed. The case is nice and quiet too, although a lot bigger than I was expecting.

I will also try my hand at overclocking the CPU to 3.8-4 Ghz to get even more performance.

I kept my 650W seasonic PSU from my previous rig, only had it for 4 years so didn't see the point buying a new one. Pretty sure it came with a 7 year warranty. Seasonic is the GOAT PSU brand.

Currently rocking my old AMD 7950 GPU. Didn't get a new one due to the prices atm and the fact that Vega is just around the corner.

I will either get a Vega 56 or a 1070/1080. Don't like how power hungry the new Vega 64 is projecting to be, cbf getting a new PSU just for the GPU.

I am aiming or either a 1080p / 144hz monitor or go all out and get a 1440p / 144hz. I probably need to decide on the monitor first then choose the GPU.

I was quite pleased with myself, even more so now given that prices for certain things have kept going up due to the crypto mining craze! I ended up getting a cheaper 1080 GTX to complete the build and a 1080p/144hz monitor.

I've spent the last week getting myself back up to scratch with PC's, as its been a fair few years since I was in the loop and purchasing PC Powerplay mags p)

I want to build a computer but my budget is irritatingly tight at the moment.

Stick to 1080p if you have a budget.
A GTX 1060 / RX 580 graphics card is probably the minimum required to game at 1440.
To game at 4k you probably need at least a GTX 1080 or RX Vega 64...

I don't notice a massive difference between FHD and UHD movies so I figured gaming wouldn't be overly different.

What system are you currently gaming with? 1080p/60hz would be a guess if it's been a few years since years.
