From Skysports.

Reports Liverpool have signed Garcia for £6mil from Barca and agreed a deal in priciple for Alonso of 16 million euros with a further 2 million euros depending on success.

So Liverpool could be lining up across midfield.

Kewell Alonso Gerrard Garcia

Looks quite good. :D

Underachiever Unproven Good player Unproven.

Best thing about that lineup is that is doesnt have SWP in it.

Unproven in the EPL yes but proven in La Liga, which isn't exactly a footballing backwater. Apparently Garcia was second in assists for Barca last season and someone Benitez thought good enough for Valencia and it would seem many on this board are already aware of Alonso's talents.

As for SWP, if we have signed Garcia we won't be in for him, which leaves only Spurs...so that would be another contract at Man City then...they couldn't even sign Super Danny, which only goes to confirm that he's world class :D

Name the succesful imports to the EPL from the Spanish leagues. ;) It's often said that Spain (and Italy) is the hardest leagues to come from because the style of play is so different. As far as I am concerned every player, no matter how expensive they are comes into the EPL needing to prove themselves.

Have to say I was very happy to hear that you have signed Garcia. I would be extremely surprised to see SWP go to Spurs, but I could see a slight possibility of him going to Anfield. Not any more. :D

Still, all City fans want to see SWP continue in his development as a footballer knowing full well that it probably means he will end up spending the bulk of his career elsewhere. :(

How many players have come from La Liga to the Premiership?

I remember it was once thought foriegn players couldn't hack the physicality of the English game. they turned out to be right didn't they

IMO Josemi will be a sucess in England and a snip at £2 million. In the games I've seen he reminds me of a faster Gary Neville  :D

That's only 'cause Gary Chuckle's manly 'tache weighs him down.

I didnt see any link about Alonso? Garcia for 6 million though! He isnt exactly a proven superstar or anything...seems a bit pricy.

Its a different article on the same site under the heading of Alonso to Anfield

Yeah I found it now? How are these done deals? Dont we need the money from the proposed Owen departure to fund these deals?

Owen leaving is making me sick to my stomach. I could handle Danny Murphy (as sad as it was) but not both!!

It was once thought that Phil Neville was a crap footballer, 'nuff said. Generalisations tend to end when they are proven to be not the case. I am not saying your Spaniards will be crap, but until they prove their worth one way or another they are an unknown quantity in English football.

J-S Veron was very highly rated from a top European league.

we have the money from not having a busy summer last summer and the selling of Heskey and Murphy.

I don't know the exact state of our books but apparently the money for transfers has always been there but the wage bill had to be reduced before any new signings could be brought in

Apparently the takeover bid from Steve Morgan is back on as well, maybe some money coming from there.

Having said that wasn't the big thing that Liverpool had the money, just after Houllier's failures they were a bit reluctant to let him get his hands on it.

Not sure what is happening with the Morgan thing, thats been on/off more times than I can remember.

Its reported to be an additional £75 million for players but I believe it when I see it.

I have heard rumors that the Morgan takeover is back on too but it will take at least 4 to 6 weeks to happen you would think. As for always having the money but not wanting to let Houllier get is hands on it...well I hope your right.

lol

I can't really see Patrick leaving England now. I mean, i know many sources have indicated he has been in negotiations, and serious ones at that, with Real Madrid, but something just doesn't seem to fit.

In my opinion, it was going to be EITHER, Vieira or Owen to head to Spain, not both.

Gaizka Mendieta has been a superb buy for Boro. Especially as a free transfer. Doriva has also been very good at Boro, also a free from Celta Vigo. As for others, I doubt a whole heap have made the move. Who have been failures from the Spanish league?? If they are good enough they adapt, although it does take 6 months or so to settle.

Lauren and Geremi are two others who've been relative successes.

I think it is more the lack of outright successes than failures that makes me wary of claiming Spain as a potential hotbed of recruiting for English clubs. There are a few reasons for that, the first is that the best players historically would see no need to move from Spain to England. As a result the players English clubs do see tend to be the more average ones. I think that has changed over the past year or so, but at this stage I think the jury is still out on whether you can accurately predict if a player frmo the Spanish leagues will be able to carry his form over to the English leagues.

As for Doriva and Mendieta, I think it is pretty easy to be considered a success when you come on a free transfer, I would argue that neither will be able to sustain a successful career in English football, Mendieta becuase he is 95 years old, and Doriva becuase he is crap. ;)

I would also imagine (not 100% on this) that the likes of Doriva and Geremi would not really have been that influenced by the Spanish style of player having spent minimal time there.

Javier De Pedro was good in the Spanish leagues.

We are gonna win the title.

I will be watching him with interest this year, I thought we were a dead cert to get him, and was looking forward to seeing what he can do on the left in England.

He does have a few question marks on him in terms of pace, but his use of the ball is excellent. 50/50 proposition, and apparently hasn't been great in the pre-season, but could be a bargain if he can send a few crosses into the likes of Stead, Mr. Jordan etc.

You love to have a go at the Boro don't you moomba
:)
Mendieta was 30 in March, so half the age of 3/4 of the City side. Doriva crap? well Brazilian international, World Cup r/up, played in Italy, Spain and Englands top division. Terrible player

The good news is Sociedad don't want to sell Alonso to another la liga club and they hate Madrid, with a visceral passion, that most of us reserve for collingwood. ;)
