Is he?

If so, surely he must be a chance. One of the best small forwards in the league this season. Won a nomination, so I assume he can win the award.

Cynicism tells me he won't because he is not one of the AFL's poster boys.

While the Martin, Trengrove and Scully will alll be superstars...and probably better than Jeffy, surely Garlett has objectively had a better year.

Thoughts?

why must you be so hateful sin city?

Yes he is eligble, but i dont think he has a chance to win the award OP

Given that he received a nomination last week you would probably put two and two together and realise that he's eligible.

Well, they talk about Martin not being eligible, and a few other guys. Don't think it is an unreasonable question. And, the rest still reads fine?

Menstruating?

Ahh, ok. And there is an age limit?

However, why would a guy who will kick 40+ goals for the year in a 'non-functioning' forward line not have a chance? I think if they looked at the award objectively, he'd be a huge chance.

most of the time these awards go to the players who get nominated in the early rounds. The last 4-6 rounds are given to players who are able to win but wont win and are usually given a nomination through the lack of nominees.

Hannaby or whatever his name is has it in the bag.

Garlett might get a couple of the 1 votes

The media have a woody over that guy from Sydney named Hannaberry or Tackleberry or whatever his name is.. Reckon he'll win the NRS this year as a result...
Jeffy should come close though as kicking 30+ goals as a small forward in only his 2nd year (he didnt play in the first 3 games either) is a massive effort...

FORWARDS
Jeff Garlett (Carlton) -
Garlett won a NAB Rising Star nomination last week and backed up that display with another standout performance. The lively Blue, fresh from six goals against the Bombers, booted 4.2 against Richmond to cause havoc at ground level as he set his team alight in the swirly conditions at the MCG. Can little Jeffy do it again this week against the Cats?

5th nomination in the AFL team of the week this season for Whispering Death.

21 yrs. anyone that was/is nominated has chance...unfortunately not seen as the favourite

Yep, this is a media award, and so the NRS criteria is mostly....

1. How many footy journo's re-bleat a players name (the major KPI)

2. Dream-team points.

I'm amazed at how little attention Garlett has got in his first 2 years. He's kicked 4 goal bags before, and only when he kicked 6 did it force them to nominate him. Clocking up 6 goals at AFL level is way more impressive than a 30 possession stat game. High possession stats will always happen in teams that flood habitually.

Agreed. Look at Lake in alot of games. He does dominate in the air sometimes, but most of his 35 touch games are playing as a sheepdog out the back.

6 goals, albeit against average opposition must be very close to 3 brownlow votes. I hope he at least finishes in the top 5. If he doesn't, will prove those first two points all too clearly.

He won't win as someone said media are obsessed with Hannebury.

However look at the stats & he should finish Top 3.

Playing in a difficult position.

Ranked 1st - total goals ( rising star nominees )
Ranked 18th - total goals in AFL 34 goals
Ranked 6th - Inside 50's ( rising star nominees )
Ranked 5th - Tackles ( rising star nominees )

I decided to have a look at AFLCA Player Award to see how Garlett would go if their votes chose the winner. It was actually pretty interesting ..........

The end results was (up to rd 19 as rd 20 votes arn't displayed

1). Garlett. is leading with 24 points over Martin and NitNat on 23 points, and Hanneberry on 16 points.

2) Garlett was unlucky not to be nominated earlier than he was !!!!!!! On all but 2 occasional it was the eligable player with the highest votes that got the nomination. Garlett polled 5 votes in rd 5, 7 and 10 but the nominations went to Trengove (6 votes), Scully (10 votes) and Martin (5 votes) respectively. He was unlucky not to get it in week 10 as Martin had only 2 votes until that point to Garletts 10

Oh yeah, the 1 time the player with the highest votes didn't get the nomination was when Gysbert was handed his BS nomination despite Robinson scoring 5 votes IN THE SAME GAME ............

3) Hanneberry, the media darling, only recieved votes 2 rd's, 6 points in rd 4 and 10 points in rd 10.

4) NitNat scored heavily at the start of the season, with 5 points in rd 2, 10 in rd 4 and 8 in rd 7 but nothing since

5) If you classify a "significant" game as one in which a player scores 5+ points (eg both coaches must vote the player in the games top 5 players) then Garlett leads with 4 games, to Martins and NitNat's 3.

In conclusion, Garlett probably won't win the award as he isn't a media love child, or a midfielder, but he has had 1 hell of a year !!!!!!!!
