Will Garrick Ibbotson manage to work his way in to the side at all next season? How was his progress in the WAFL this year?

I Think he was bottom age when drafted, so I would think he would very much be a project player. I would expect to see him regular for E.Freo League next year but who can tell.

Ibbo would want to improve significantly for the sharks next year, if you can't show something in that midfield there is something wrong. We took the wrong shark last year, Swallow looks to be a real prospect (which a lot of people said prior to the draft).

yeah, and swallow was taken at 43 in the draft!! we had three picks before he was taken... seems a bit silly to ignore him now in hindsight!

You could say it was another case of us taking a talented HBF and planning to to turn him into a midfielder rather than drafting the midfielder with problems....

Swallow is a very good prospect (tallish, fast and well built) but he did have problems with his kicking. Might still show flaws that saw him fall when we see more of him, but overall an AFL midfielder.

Ibbotson is also tall, has excellent skills, agility and reads the play particularly well from the HBF (or so my cousin tells me). Freo were apparently very keen on Pendlebury and Oakley-Nicholls, and he was probably the next most similar sort of player in the draft.

There is plenty of time for Ibbotson - he is bottom aged as Nurries points out. But he hasn't had a great start and I would have thought he was more a rookie prospect than a second round pick.

This is a kid who can play.

I think your mob were on the ball when they snared him as a bottom age player.

Definitely in for the long haul.

A natural athlete with real flair - takes a great mark, reads the ball like he wrote the book.

I would expect that he will have a solid season at WAFL League level in 07 and then be ready to roll in 08 as an AFL player.

Be patient and I think you will be happy with him.

That is just about exactly the same thing Adrian Curleys Uncle (who is a Saints supporter) told me. Reckons He will be a gun.

Garrick's Dad is a really tall guy, must be 6' 7". Hopefully the young bloke will grow a bit more yet and eventually give us the big bodied midfielder we have been looking for.

Maybe a Pavlich/Goodes type player. :D

Not trying to place undue expectation on the young lad...

Let's see him perform consistently for the Sharks and go from there. I can say the guy is a natural athlete, went to my high school (Corpus Christi College) and he excelled at whatever sport he chose to take up.

Macca and the Carrs are also ex-Corpus....does Ibbo have the same bloodthirst (for others' or their own...;) ) as these three?? :D

Not for blood, surely!

[Edit] oh sorry, i thought your post said 'bloody thirsty'

I dunno about Ibbo, was in years below me, but if he's not bloodthirsty he's definitely got the hunger. Apparently among his mates his nickname is 'backpack' (don't ask me why) but i think its pretty awesome.

I take it you would have been the same year as my gf then.

I read somewhere the "Backpack" nickname came from the fact he wears his backpack everywhere he goes - even in the car... it's like a permanently attached appendage. :D

Cool nickname anyway. :thumbsu:

No we didn't. 15 other clubs also passed on Swallow including the Eagles. If he went at 43 its not just Freo that was rating him lower.

Our past drafting efforts, would mean that Ibbotson would probably turn out a better player than Dodd, Grover, Thornton etc.

mate as a loyal east freo supporter and one who attends every game I can tell you that Garrick would be the biggest waste time. Has had no progress and although play seniors normally he has no impact when he goes back to play reserves. Shockin player, Riley Dunn would be better

Gee he must be average if Dunny's better. Although anyone who supports Geelong, Derby County and Celtic definately can't be trusted.
