There's no doubt Gary Ablett is a good face and role model for the club but does he have the confidence to speak in front of press etc.? Should Gary Ablett Junior be the captain of the Cats in 2007, what do you think?

I'd be happy for Tom Harley to caretake for a couple of years until Gaz develops a little bit more. He's taken big steps this year but still whinges to much for my liking and hasn't yet mastered the ability to break a tag.

I do believe that he has the ability to be a Carey-like captain who can stamp his mark on the game when his team needs it. He's almost there but he could do with more time.

Tom is a natural leader.

CE , I know this may be very early but the Tom who is appears to be a natural leader is Tom H. Geelong seem to draw the shy and reserved type , now with Tom he has already faced the media, talked on the radio and all on the back of U18 performances that some say made him worthy of the #1 pick. To me this is a natural leader who may have the talent to match his personality.

Of course , it some time off so in the mean time who should be the Captain. I dislike the StKilda method of having a new Captain every year. To me when everyone is the Captain , no one is.
So ideally we should have a fit Captain , say what you want about Ben Graham at least he was on the ground most of the time.I fear Harley being our man , another Captain who is in the injury room more than on the grass.
I'd prefer somone who will step up under pressure , someone who can kick a goal when its needed so I would think Chapman would make a good Captain.
He has not had it easy , he had to work for his position but now has gained respect of most in the AFL. He has gone into bat for the Cats on and off the field. My only question would he enjoy the media stuff?

I know where you are coming from. Unfortunately, I don't think we are overwhelmed with options. Chappy would be a pretty good candidate.

The Hawks have hardly gained much from Crawford stepping down and appointing Vandenberg as a transitional skipper. They should have given it straight to Hodge.

From an outsiders point of view I think Chapman would be a great choice as next Captain. He's hard at it, has the football smarts and plays consistent footy at a high level. Tough and skillful are good ingredients, looks to have pretty good communication skills from what I have seen of him on Sunday Foort show etc.

King is doing alright. I say keep King particularly if he plays out the year injury free and puts in a good preseason.

Ablett is under enough pressure and always will be. Simply having the ablett name is enough. No need to add captaincy to that.

Bartel seems to be a future captain to me (in 2-3 years). Talented, hardworking, consistent and good with the media. Local boy who seems to be level headed. Fits all the criteria.

Chapman is an option. I think they are our only two real options for the future.

Chappy is much better with the media than Bartel, and both of them hands down beat Junior. The one time I've seen him interviewed post-game Tony Jones had to bribe him with Kylie Minogue tickets to get him to do it. But in the meantime keep it with King. He's a good captain who is good with the media but not to good (like Lingy) and is a natural leader on field.

Do you think the issue of captaincy is majorly important? I rather liked the idea of having leadership groups and all that jazz that was discussed in the mid-season mag.

Even so, I would like to see Bartel as captain, he's still growing as a superstar, and captains should be superstars. Harley, Ling and Mooney as vice in my opinion. Simply because Harley is a natural born leader, Ling never gives up, and Mooney plays with 200% passion. I think Chapman embodies good leadership qualities however I feel he needs to express that informally (which is just as good), I don't think he can be a suitable captain.

Yeah lets replace King for Harley.

So intead of having a injury prone ruckman as captain we will have a injury prone Backman, who is struggling to capature his best. That makes sense to me.

If Chapman isn't captain in 2007, you blokes are wasting your time. Seriously.

King is a fairy.

My thoughts on the next leader of the GFC is we need someone that will lead by example, and one that the other players in the team want to be led by. Look at captains (past and present) from other sides...hird, voss, Hall, Kouta, judd etc...I think that the guys that play under these leaders would feel a foot or two taller after a rousing speech before heading out onto the ground for example. These guys talk a good game off the ground but they also back it up on the ground, where that is what Geelong has been lacking (in my eyes) from its leaders in the past few years and there would only be a few players of that calibre at the club at the moment. As far as GAJ for captain..awesome on the field but at the moment I dont think we will see him giving a booming speech to the players before a game, or fronting the media on a regular basis. My thoughts on potential captains.....Chapman- Talks well off the field, not afraid to pull punches on the field (at opposition or own team mates) Mooney- Also handles media well, is the barometer for geelong on the field, if he is hot the team generally is, if only he could control his agression...I'm not sure about Ling, does the leadership stuff very well but I dont think the way plays the game is very inspiring (gets alot of easy, uneffective touches...quite a yawn actually), Bartel would be my darkhorse!

I thought Ling was a dead set certainty last year......

Chapman has raised another level in 2006 on the back of a good grounding anyway. I now think he will be our next skipper.

I think alot of people did, but he has really fallen away in terms of on field form performance this season. Has been alot better later on doing his 'run with' role however

Very interesting view. I think Harley would certainly be a great leader and role model especially as he seems to be the minority around the club who are prepared to do interviews with radio and newspaper. I like it!
