According to all the news services here, he has been sacked after demanding to be re-signed (sounds familiar). He wanted a decision now so he could look towards Melbourne for another job.

Took Adelaide a while to realise that he ruined their club, just as he did with mine.

Not even Hawthorn is silly enough to take Ayres on, are they?

He's gone - effective immediately.

Assistant Coach Neil Craig will take over for the rest of this year.

Ayers was told on Monday he contract would not be renewed after 2004.

Well I guess you could say one thing - they didnt stuff around - they told it like they saw it - and he did the rest.

Nothing wrong with Ayres coaching, he just need better player management, ie trading of high picks and that might not be entirely his fault.

Hawthorn would be silly not to look at him and so would Richmond for that matter.

Ayres out, Craig in at Adelaide

Gary Ayres has stood down as coach of Adelaide, effective immediately and will be replaced until the end of the season by assistant coach Neil Craig.

The club informed Ayres on Monday morning that his contract would not be renewed at the end of the season, with the coach deciding it was in his best interests and those of the club that he finish up immediately.

Craig will coach the club for the rest of the season, after which a search will commence for a new senior coach. The club selected Craig as interim coach because he is well known by the current senior list, enjoys a positive relationship with the players and his exposure to other elite sports. He was the sports science co-ordinator for the Australian Cycling Federation for five years. He played SANFL football for Norwood, North Adelaide and Sturt and coached Norwood from 1991 to 1995.

In a statement released by the club, it was decided not to continue with Ayres for two reasons.

The first is what was termed “the club’s lack of total and consistent competitiveness in 2004 and the fade-outs in the latter stages of recent seasons, and games this year.”

The second reason given was: “the belief that Gary Ayres can’t take the club’s list any further, and the club will therefore be looking for a coach with a better fit, given our future needs.”

Ayres was the club’s longest serving coach, leading Adelaide to 55 wins from 107 games in charge. However 2004 appears set to be the first time in four years there will be no appearance in the finals. The Crows have won just four of 13 games.

He coached Geelong from 1995 to 1999 and 65 wins and a draw from 116 games in charge. The Cats lost to Carton in the 1995 Grand Final in his first year in charge.

In 1994 he was assistant coach to Malcolm Blight at Geelong, which followed a magnificent 269 game career for Hawthorn from 1978 to 1993 that included five premierships, two Norm Smith medals and a best and fairest award.

and that has what to do with it? why should we pay out a yrs worth of contract then give ayres say 2 yrs in which he will do most likely nothing

Ayres would love that... a year off to put his feet up then go back home to Hawthorn and coach a team full of 1st round draft picks.

Shwabby's a good bloke just chop it him at the knees and scatter a few crumbs his way.

BTW is he really fit to coach with that heart condition?

Not a bad idea but can the Hawk fans endure the pain that is Peter Schwabb?

i think we can, it doesn't matter who would take over schwabs job, unless you win the flag (and even then) their is always going to be people bitching.
