Didn't see an obvious thread to put this in, so..

The month of February is a time when most footballers are full of hope but that was far from true for Gary Rohan, who was staring at his football mortality at the tender age of 21.

While his teammates were gearing up for Sydney's premiership defence Rohan, a highly respected and well-liked player at the club, contemplated giving the game away.

Despite having been 10 months into a gruelling rehabilitation program after his horrific leg break, Rohan was still a long way off a comeback. Any encouragement he felt from being given the green light to resume running was soon replaced by doubt and pessimism. Every time he ran he would wake up the following morning in pain.
''That's when it really hit me, ''s--t, am I going to have these all the time?'' said Rohan, who hails from Cobden in Victoria's western districts.
''After a big session I'd pull up really sore and wouldn't be able to do too much in the next couple of weeks. I thought it was going to be like this for ages.''
That's when thoughts about pulling the pin crept into his mind. Enter Rhyce Shaw. Rohan credits the veteran, his official mentor at the club, with helping him see the light.

Always remember an article about Shaw in the U18 championships and the Vic metro team were going out to celebrate after a win.
Shaw volunteered to stay behind with a team mate recovering from concussion.

Glad to have had him aboard the Swans premiership train.

And the good news on the Rohan front.
Rohan is now pain-free but still walks with a limp, though his prospects now appear more promising.
''It's not sore, it's just a habit that I have to grow out of, I've done it for so long,'' Rohan says of his limp. ''The boys and the physio people pick me up and say 'stop limping', but I don't even know I'm doing it.''
Rohan is back running, working on his endurance, which he concedes is not his strong suit, with three-minute intervals around the SCG. He is confident he has lost none of his trademark speed, saying he feels more ''explosive'', though he is yet to race the clock.
Rohan overcame another small mental hurdle this week when he emerged unscathed from a series of agility runs aimed at improving his change of direction.
''I was worried going into it but as soon as I did it I was fine and had no worries - my confidence grew even more after I did that,'' Rohan said. ''The last month I'm flying. It's been the best month of my rehab, which is good.''
The next goal for Rohan is joining in full training, which he hopes will happen in the next three to four weeks. Currently, he warms up with the main group and does light skills work before separating to follow his own program.
Not surprisingly, Rohan says he is most worried by the competitive drills and the risk of re-injury. ''If I get a knock, I'll be thinking of it straight away, if it's not sore I'll be fine and have no worries,'' Rohan said. ''But that will be the hardest part.''
Playing, of course, is still a long way off. The club has not placed a timeline on when the speedster will return but the player himself is adamant it will be this year.
''I thought early ''am I going to play this year? All this hard work, is there something for it or should I just wait for pre-season next year?'' he said. ''But as soon as I've been running better I've got this thing in my head that I am going to play this year. I'm just pushing myself.
''I don't have any pain, the bone's healed completely. At the end of the year I get the rod out and I'll have a massive pre-season and hopefully have a massive year - without any injuries.''

Gary seems honest and level headed about the situation
Can but wish him the best of luck.

As harsh as it sounds and all the best to him he really needs to get that rod out asap before playing i broke my tib and fib also compound in a motocross accident got the rod inserted 2 screws top and bottom and i have been never been the same pain from screws like gary said and it is always in the back of your mind get it out asap

I'm just glad he didn't make his comeback game against North. Thomas just can't be trusted around legs. When he goes down to the supermarket to get half-price on choc-chip woolworths-brand ice-cream I bet he slides into a couple of pairs of legs.

A few positives, but a lot of negatives there by Rohan. A few lines had me worried he might have Compression Syndrome on the fracture.

He is a very level headed kid though, so he may just be taking this as seriously as he needs too and work from there. Cameron mentioned during the week that he may be out for skills training shortly, so maybe its all finally paying it off for him.

Great to hear these updates. Though he's probably coming along slower than we hoped, in a way it's encouraging that they're taking nothing for granted and are making sure the rehab is done right. Good to see Gary seems to have a very good support network at the club as well.

I've got to say, Rhyce's leadership and guidance has been a very unexpected bonus to his recruitment. He never struck me as much of a leadership type when he was at the Pies, but he's been absolutely excellent since he came to the club. From memory, he helped Melcho get back into things after his second reco as well, plus a few other things here and there. Plus, what a delightful beard!

I'm going to hunt Thomas down.

This won't be a popular view but I don't feel Thomas did anything untoward and at the time it was just one of those unfortunate accidents in football. I'm not a fan of the way he goes about his football with diving and a few off parts of his game but this was just an accident and bad timing with a bit of poor technique thrown in. Goodes used to have a poor technique also.

Saddens me that it happened to one of the most promising Swans in a long time. That goal he kicked aginst Norf in the pre season when he ran and soccered for half the field showed his importance. He was going to work in tandem with Jetta at getting out the back and running onto it. Lucky Jetta had a great year.

Hope he can get back and realise his potential.

I kind of agree but Thomas is a little dog most of the time. I thought Rohan showed great class when he rang in to a radio talkback station as 'Gary from Cobden' and defended Thomas. But what really irks me about the slide itself, Goodes was suspended for it the week before yet Thomas gets off and he broke a guys leg!?!?
A couple of weeks ago Thomas ran past the ball and left the ground and took Ben Reid out smashing his mouth with a hip and shoulder and was also cleared.. they call Goodes a protected species.

A new update on Rooster. Matt Cameron says he joined the main group last week and pulled up with a little soreness but nothing to worry about. He says they will be monitoring him and will inform when he is ready to play. Now that tells me that he will definitely play this season and that it will be sooner rather than later. This is really good news as we could do with him in the forward line at the moment. Either that or him breaking the lines on the wing or half back.

I like your optimism. Would be really hard for him to come back without having done a pre-season or shaken off the mental scars. You'd more likely see him come back into the reserves to get him up to game speed and agility, do a big pre-season and come back bigger, faster, stronger, next year.

Good thing about being a pessimist is that you're either proven right, or pleasantly surprised.

To me those comments tell me that at the very least Rohan is expected to play reserves games this year. You never know as in a month Rohan could be ready to play in the reserves and a month after that he might be ready for seniors. Anything is possible.

It woule be awesome to see him running around in the ressies in a month, but I wonder if that's feasible? I really hope so...Regardless if he's running about in the twos by round 13-14, he could arguably pushing for a spot in the senior team by 18-19 perhaps?
