He's struggling thats for sure
he wants it out but at the same time its almost a bit of security for him (he still has nightmares)i think he said he'd be 6 weeks out if he had the rod out...but yeah it gives him so much trouble...alot of pain, after a game he's up all hours of the night icing it...he still wants it out years end though...i think its more building his confidence back up is what maybe holding him back

Why do people keep saying he is out of form? He is not out of form, he's in the same form he has always been in - getting a tiny bit less of the ball but having a few more tackles

Listen to Soph mate its a big injury ( I no for a fact ) and as she said he is pulling up very sore after every game , he is just played 30 games at senior level. No one said he is out of form but I have no doubt his leg would be holding him back and his confidence in it could also could be holding him back. I would hold back judgement mate ( I no you go by stats a hell of a lot ) until he is fully fit. Also probably finding it hard in a side that has a dysfunctional forward line , would J Gunston get a kick in our side out the moment probably not.

I agree with this. I think when you are coming back from such a big injury you just have to be patient. If he hasn't had the rod out yet there is obviously a good reason for it. He probably wants to push himself harder on and off field but can't because of the pain, it sucks but in that situation you just have to listen to your doctor.

Jesus H Christ, I say he's not out of form and I get a barrage of "he's injured and sore and there's a dysfunctional forward line and he hasn't played many senior games"

Imagine what would have happened if I actually said anything critical.

No issue with your post or the replies, people are just discussing a player's form/fitness. In Gary's case, his leg is still going to be a major factor in determining his form.

On the leg topic then, why is the rod there? As a layman I thought the rod was there to help the leg heal, but several sources at the Swans have said that his leg is healed now. So why is it there? If its to provide extra security or comfort it seems like it is failing at its job.

I'm definitely not a doctor, but if his surgeon has said he has to leave it in then there must be some reason for it, as Punts said the rod can stay in for up to 2 years so although the leg has healed it may not be strong enough yet.

I've broken bones a few years ago during local footy and now have plates and screws. At the time my surgeon said that typically the plates and screws remain in place simply to avoid having a further surgery, however he said it is standard practice in other countries to have them removed once the injury is healed. He also mentioned removal is an option where the screws pop or cause discomfort. I am guessing they took a similar approach in the case of Gary

Yeah but I think it's reasonable to expect his game to have improved a bit from 2 years ago, were it not for the injury. If he hadn't copped the broken leg, you'd expect his return to be a bit above 2011 levels.

Pieces of steel inserted into ones leg are never straight forward believe me. We won't really see the best of Gary again till 2015.

Looked awesome playing in defence on the HBF , got a heap more of the ball and used his pace/run and carry , also set up a few goals. Didn't play the 2nd half looks like the leg again
IF Rohan was dropped to the Reserves to see how'd he go playing a full game, and IF he didn't play the second-half because of his leg and IF the problem is with the rod in his leg, it looks like the coaching staff may have the answer to their question. It may be that they now cut their losses and send him to get the rod out now, rather than wait to the end of the season.

The rod, AFAIK, is there to make sure the bone grows straight. That being said, there is still a risk that the bone could cave in under itself even after it grows straight. So the doctors keep it in to make sure the bone can work under its own strength before removing the rod.

Correct mate

Half back flank would suit him more I've been saying it for ages! Gaz doesn't get beaten in one on ones and it's easier to get a kick behind the ball.

On the other hand, his speed, height, tackling ability and straight kicking make him a perfect forward. That said we need someone who can kick straight and has speed in the backline
