Geelong 2020 = Dad's Army.

Geelong 2020: Too old & decrepit to win the Premiership?

  • Yes.

  • No.

  • They were too old & decrepit this year, by next season it'll be a shitshow.

OP's lack of self awareness is astounding.
Has any team in the AFL era won a Premiership with an average age as old as Geelong will have next year? Seems unlikely, let's ask Ron The Bear.

Burgoyne 37
Puopolo 33
Henderson 32
Frawley 32
Mohr 32
Smith 32
Stratton 31
McEvoy 31
Schoenmakers 29
Breust 29
Ceglar 29
Mirra 29
Shiels 28
Scully 28
Gunston 28

And the team didn't even make finals. Awks

Hawks have just as many over 28s on their list.

I'm guessing with the youth we play we will still have a younger best 22 than the Hawks.

Mohr, Schoenmakers, Mirra won't be on our list next year and Poppy may not be either. So 11-12 players for the Hawks, and a massive FIFTEEN for the Cats.

Big difference is the age of our senior core. Mitchell 26, O'Meara 26, Worpel 21, Wingard 26, Sicily 25, Impey 24, Hardwick 23, Lewis 21. Five of them finished top 10 in our B&F compared with a pitiful two Geelong players under 26 in your top 10 - Gryan Miers and Tim Kelly. (gonekis)

Hawks with a spring in their step. Straight sets is going to be fun.

For comparison, Geelong was 26.21 this year (26.49 in finals) and Hawthorn 26.52. So (for example) with no changes to Geelong's finals team they'd be pushing 27 to start the season.

So if Geelong reach 27 average H&A age next season -as seems likely- that will them put them into the Oldest Premiership Never category. 😆

Dangerfield turns 30 in early April, so they could potentially have nine 30yo+ players in the team (with Stanley and Blicavs not far behind) in the early rounds. That's only happened once before - Fitzroy's 1946 Round 1 team, top of the second list above.

All the above players are common skilled role players (non core) and their retirements will have no effect on the side.

Spin it however you want it, Hawfies have the oldest current list, oldest best 22 and didn't make finals. Geelong has 7 picks in the first two rounds of the next two drafts.

Geelong is a younger, better, homegrown team with better future prospects both based on their current list and future picks. Sorry champ, but this is one you won't win

We should be getting 2 top 20s this year and possibly 2 more next year.

And Burgoyne at 40 is better than half yohr list.
