Being a long life supporter of the GFC, i have seen them go through some tough and good times. But watching thm last week, in my mind i have seen the worst game of football that has ever been played by the GFC. Some of the players were just woeful,
McCarthy - cant kick, cant run, cant play

Gardiner - cant believe that he even makes the team

Rooke - just all round crap, has commitment but no sense of the game

Hunt - never goes towards the goals, never!

just to name a few....
Even a more experienced player like Scarlett (in my mind all- australian selection has gone to his head) didnt know what was going on, beaten hands down by Fevola to the point were Harley was moved onto him.

Geelong need to re-establish its list, Geelong need to do what Carlton has done even to the point of sacking the coach, sacking the recruitment officials. Geelong need to do this now and need to do it well if they will ever be classified a threat in this competition.

Interesting that you say that, has had his arse kicked 2 weeks in a row now...

I dare say if he doesn't have a 8+/10 year, the Cats will die.

I think the problem with Geelong was that they have traded away or delisted almost every senior player that was at the club. What is the oldest player? 25? I bet most are below 22 that lined up last week.

Kids are inconsistant. Every team needs a balance between age/experience and the youth. Most clubs have a few players that have played more senior games the the entire Geelong team, its a stupid way to structure a team.

If its all youth you will see the extremes from extremely good to extreme garbage. The experience settles the team down and provides real leadership when under pressure.

I do not think there are any quick fixes. This wipe out the entire list and just blood young kids is the most stupid thing you could do. Geelong will just have to ride out the waves of inconsistancy.

What senior players have we traded away?

Of course our team had very few over 22's on the weekend, that's what happens when you have 7-8 of your best team injured.

As for oldest player, we have 5 players over the age of 25, all were injured last weekend.

They did the right thing by going for youth. We had a balance, we had draft picks, we had senior players, we had a 5 year plan and we had members who were sucked in to the hype. Unfortunately, its been foiled on two fronts.

a) a coach who cannot coach

b) senior players who cannot provide on field leadership, or the playing ability expected of senior players

Its gone backwards now, and its hurting the young players badly. We are lacking direction big time, and some of the younger players have gone backwards.

Its all gone to ****, and the club will not move forward until someone wakes up and sacks Thompson. Harsh words maybe, but I cant see any other option.

I do not have my records from pre 2000 so I do not remember which senior players were let go but it Thompson (whenever he came in) culled most of the senior players, do not remember who was traded other than us getting Colbert, around 2000 the vast majority of the senior players were let go.

I know the better players who are injured are over 22, but they are not what you would call players with alot of experience. Geelong look fantastic until the pressure comes on, you need veteran players to hold the team together when they are under pressure.

Every team in the competition has them, even St Kilda.

I agree with going for youth but I think you have to do it in moderation rather than go for a quick fix. You basically are lucky if 2 or 3 players per year develop or show the potential to develop, that also allows you to stagger the age of your playing group so they are not all retired within a short period of time of eachother.

I do not want to search through the Geelong list but who are the players that around 30? Who are 29-27 I know there are a few around 25 but there is nobody I can remember who played in one of the successful Geelong era teams and alot of those players in that team were not older than Colbert.

Where have all the experienced players gone? The ones who have had experience winning, not losing. Playing 50 games of being spanked is not really going to give you the knowledge you need to dig in and fight out games.

Carlton did the right thing, they grabbed a whole bunch of young kids but also got recycled players from other clubs who have that experience that they can at least pass on to the kids.

I am just surprised you do not have the veteran players to hold the team together. Are all of them injured?

They're not?

Peter Riccardi - 242 AFL games
Ben Graham - 197 AFL games
Brenton Sanderson - 182 AFL games
Steven King - 137 AFL games
Darren Milburn - 121 AFL games

So between them, those 5 have played 879 games over 54 season, yet they don't have "alot of experience"?

We are missing our 5 eldest and most experienced footballers, that is something that NO team would be able to cover.

Yes, which i told you from the start.

Our 5 eldest and most experienced players are currently injured. As mentioned, last weekend we lost nearly 900 games of experience.

Take the five eldest and most experienced players from any team and you'd find a lack of "veteran" players.
