I thought I would bring up the controversial topic of gender equality for discussion here. Everywhere I turn now, I am seeing the papers push this idea that women are generally not being treated as equals to their male counterparts.

Now if it isn’t a female not making the crows board and complaining or if it isn’t about how bad it is that they aren’t paid the same, next I hear there is a top-100 female artist list in response to the Triple J Top 100 being predominantly male artists.

Gender equality for salaries
http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0,,26397284-2682,00.html

Now my position is that Gender Equality is a great thing and should be embraced, and I’m sure most people think this aswell, but it gets a bit tiresome, when the gender card is often played in society for things not being fair.

So what do people think? Is gender discrimination alive and well in society or is it nonsense? Do females in society get treated the same? What about in business? What do the ladies think? Is football embracing women enough? Any other thoughts?

Top 100 Female music list?!?! Wow

If they produce music as good as the men then they would be making the list... Infact almost works better being a good looking woman in the music industry!

The gender equality for salaries stats are one of the biggest pieces of shit you'll ever see.

The one the paper's really run with is that overall men earn 8% more than women. This stat doesn't allow for the greater number of men in the workforce and the greater experience/training of most of these men because still today a large enough number of women leave to be homemakers.

The myth that the popular media is trying to create that there are nasty little sexists working in HR departments paying women 8% less for equivalent positions is total bullshit.

Also, FWIW women have a greater chance of finishing high school and entering university. Affirmative action has done it's job and now we need to be patient while it gradually evens up the rest of society.

Why aren't these same people complaining when it comes to the salary inequalities associated with Grand Slam Tennis? Men play 5 sets and women only 3, yet for the same prizemoney. That is the equivalent of a male and female office worker, both on the same salary, yet the male works from 9-5pm and the female works from 10-2pm.

There is a call for equality and hey I am all for "equality". I could happily live in this world where women and men are treated equally. Just don't expect me to open car doors for you, pay for everything on a date and buy you drinks all night long!!! Nothing worse than a woman who is looking for a man that will treat her like a princess.

The irony is is that this is exactly what the pay equality femminist lobby wants. The only way to give men and women "equal" pay is to pay women alot more for equivalent work as women are much more likely to leave the workforce to raise children etc.

How about a company refusing to insure my car and myself due to "young males crashing that car"? I pointed out that I was not a young male and the only other driver to be included on the policy was going to be my father, but the company would still not insure it!

hmmm what about this........

I work in the mining industry a male and I both out of uni same positions same amount of hours same pay....

I had higher marks in uni, I also had more experience before starting our current jobs

To date.....he has been given more oppourtunities than I, he has also had more training than I, and rotated through different jobs (which as part of our contract, we are expected to do)

Now given that he spent a few months up at this site in his year before employment I can see why it would appear that he has more experience.

But it really gets my goat when I am continuously looked over for different jobs and being taught....its hard to get into but after a year, some if the roles I have not been taught and responsibilities I have not been shown well its a joke...Not only this but the attitude to "its the mining industry, females get use to it" is atrocious....the comments we have to listen to (regarding females) its very much so a boy club (having said this, with more strong-headed females like myself in the workforce it is slowly getting better)

Being young and blonde...its a lot harder to make it in such a male dominated industry! (And thats from the professionals....as I find the general workers absolute gentlemen
:)

I can probably give you some good advice here.

firstly, your marks at UNI mean less that jack shit when it comes to what happens inside an organisation.
secondly, everything is about relationships. not as in jobs for the boys per se, but in that certain people are better at expressing what they want and why they deserve it. waiting for someone to offer you things is probably never going to work, not just because it projects the wrong image but because they probably didn't think of you. you are less visible to your bosses that you could possibly imagine, people have low attention spans.

lastly, without knowing anything about you, or how well you perform in your job I find it slightly concerning that at no point in your post did you mention how well you did your job, or how your performance is regarded. when that is the ONLY thing that matters.

Are you suggesting that companies are only worried about what effect employees have on the bottom line ?? ;)

The bolded part is the most important. In general in my experience, guys are a lot better at negotiating salary increases and are a lot more prepared to ask for training and the like. Thats not to say that their performance is any better, just that they're more pro active in creating opportunities for themselves.

About 25 Years ago I had this huge argument about Females being able to diecast. It got a bit out of hand and we went before some sort of tribunal hearing they actually saw my point

Probably fair enough

Analysis by the Women on Boards group shows there is just one female director out of 50 on the boards of the seven ASX200 companies headquartered in SA.

In contrast, women fill 45 per cent of State Government board and committee positions, although this is short of a state target of 50 per cent which was set for 2008.
That's a pretty big difference, even taking into account the small sample size of SA companies.

Hahaha well I have far better relationships with people on site than this said person. And secondly I out perform this person in our main task 2fold....

I am not going to lie, this is my first year so I dont know a lot about the industry but thats what the purpose of this graduate program is....to get us up to speed. It just upsets me when the oppourtunity comes up for us to get into something new you dont even get the oppourtunity to voice your opinion. Its a little bit hard to explain as you would imagine and im not having a dig I dont really believe its sexism (i hope)....just forgetfulness

ps if you havent worked out im on a grad program with a set criteria i must fulfil...im not arguing about the pay we get equal amounts...Im the oppourtunities...and yes I have gone elsewhere within the company and organised things myself to get the oppourtunites that arent being offered to me within my department

To be honest, I've read your posts a couple of times.

and I'm not sure you appreciate how they come across, which could be the problem in itself.

sorry.
