So we have averaging the most inside 50's but our efficiency of kicking inside 50 is horrendous.

I guess it is a good thing that we traded away our best ball user for a pack of potato chips last year!

It actually really is. Watts wouldn’t be helping this. He didn’t magically improve this stat last year.

The system needs experience. We have so few seasoned players

Also our best talent aside from Gawn is still gaining that experience.

Hogan Trac and Oliver and dare I say it Lever

Even Gawn is well shy of 100 games. Viney and Tyson just over. Salem, Hunt Brayshaw, McDonald, and ANB around 40.

In 3-5 years those guys plus the four you named will be the top 12 in our best and fairest, but they’re well off it as a group now

Take out Lewis, Melksham, and Vince from our side on Sunday (who let’s be real, are bringing us nearly nothing at the moment) and our average games played drops to around 70 for the remaining 19 players. We’re shoehorning experience in for the sake of it at this stage because we have none anywhere else. Add Tyson, Viney, and McDonald back in and it goes up to 75. That’s where Carlton are. Brisbane average 80, North 97, and Richmond and Hawthorn around 110. We’re so far off it unless you can wind back the clock and give us the Lewis and Vince of 2015. Hibberd and Jetta, two of our most experienced players, are also struggling which makes it even harder for the younger guys

Also I lied, Tyson and Viney have played 92 and 88 games each lol

I reckon he did increase our ball retention going forward though, clearly it helps having good users.

A lot of our guys in that link up role (Harmes, ANB, Bugg, Melk) are not good users.

Watts would help a bit, but I just don’t think it’s a big loss. Was annoyed in October but now I’m just happy to be shit of him, wouldn’t care if we’d flat out delisted him lol. Nothing against him, I just enjoy the MFC more without his baggage

Yeah it was a good...release?

I too am happy he's gone - best thing for both him and our club!

Is it just me or is the Jordan Lewis "injury" just a smokescreen for him being bloody ordinary so far this year. Slow, poor decisions, worse execution and the leadership he was meant to bring onto the field seems to have gone missing!

Lucky we recruited another tall who can’t play KPP for a lot of currency to replace the scrutiny

Lever has demonstrated elite ability on the field over the course of a season, which Watts never side. I’m not sure what the comparison is - if Lever excels in any position whether it’s as third man in defence or a KPP he won’t be subject to the same scrutiny as Watts who was largely useless everywhere. It’s not like the scrutiny is on Lever because he can’t play KPP, it’s because he’s out of form and his output is well below what he demonstrated last year

Just noting the scores around the weekend at half time.

Carlton held WC to 5 goals
Cats and Port were 4 and 5
Dockers dogs 6 and 3
Saints GWS 5 and 4

Crows 8 swans 6

in our 4 games we have conceded 7, 8, 2 and 12.

If we concede 90 points which is our average against we will potentially be bottom 4 in the AFL for points conceded this season.

I hate the style of footy but we need to lock this game down and turn it into an arm wrestle, it's paramount we don't concede heavily again.

Cats defence against port was Bews, Kolodjashni, Stewart, Touhy, Blicavs and some other kid. And they average 10 points less a game against.

North's back 6 has been a mix of Tarrant Thompson Daw Williams Mcdonald MacMillan and they average 60 points against.

Come on Melbourne

Last round is a huge outlier and the R1 game was noticeably high scoring for both sides. Wouldn't attempt this kind of stats analysis just yet, need a bigger sample size.

On average we are the 5th worst defence in the AFL which is why we deservedly sit 13th. A month is a good sample size and we haven't played a difficult road trip yet. I'm not sure how you can say both sides scored goals so it doesn't count. Well yeah it was high scoring because both defences were shit

I think our leaking goals has less to do with the quality of our defence and more to do with how easily we get rebounded against. Hence why we've generated some big inside 50 numbers but still get pounded because oppositions rebound and catch our defence in vulnerable positions because they haven't had time to set up. If we get better at locking the ball inside our own forward 50 rather than it coming out almost immediately our defence will improve massively.

I don't think so, in fact I think that our high inside 50 numbers are from repeat entries from pushing up so high. Low quality but we manage to keep it in our end for long periods. Problem is we push too far up and leave no room for goals from 50 or for hit up targets short so just bomb to a crowded zone. When teams do break through our wall then we have one on one's except with defenders pushed 15m in front of their opponents who in turn end up scrambling desperately to try and get near anyone on a rebound but we don't have the legspeed.
That and I don't think our defenders have enough trust in each other, too often they leave there man to effect a contest lose their man and in turn said player gets it loose.

that's pretty much the way I see it too. i think we need some tall targets to take some marks inside the f50 so we are not scrambling all the time and take some pressure off our small forwards and we need more 1 on 1 defending instead of having 8 defenders at times, all leaving their man and having no accountability because they think extra numbers means someone else will get the job done for them.

And if we don't crowd our own forward line the opposition will go the extra flood knowing we will fall into that trap and leave wide open spaces out the back
