I'm a big traditionalist but I don't actually hate it. It'll make a lot more sense with 20 teams than 18 though.
I think you do need to expand it once the competition expands, but for now it could be left as is

That said, ultimately pointless. I don't think we will ever see 10th or 9th progress far enough to reach Grand Final day

I’d absolutely love it if it meant a shorter season where all clubs just played each other once.
I feel the same way, fixture inequality irks me and tbh I think the season goes on a bit too long anyway.

Don't really see the point of Wildcard round beyond the obvious cash grab, can't see the team finishing tenth being anywhere near the actual premiership contenders. All seems a bit pointless.

Edit: Especially if 10th has to play 4 games in the final + the wildcard round?

I would have been throwing up over this pre goody getting sacked, now I'm whatever. If Kingys attacking side can find a way to make a wild card one off at the G, whatever
Still a shit idea but I'm less mad.
It's a dumb marketing ploy, it's essentially a top 10 finals system. I'm a bit in schmuttt corner, may as well do something on the pre finals bye weekend.

Only part I hate is already it's basically only the top 4 who can win it, with a couple of teams outside doing it. How there's no chance of anyone 7-10 winning it. It's absolutely a dead set of results.

I'm basically fine with it since the last month of the season becomes mostly dead rubbers for half the comp. If they can keep a couple of extra teams playing meaningful games. Also gives a little advantage to the fifth and sixth teams.

What I don't understand is why it's called a 'Wildcard'. Wouldn't a wildcard be just picking out a team at random to play finals or something?

Wasn't the whole point of wildcard in yank sports that some conferences are harder than others. I know tennis it's just good blokes who aren't ranked get invited.

Just call it a finals qualifying weekend and I'd already hate it less

Get rid of round 0 that's a stupid name particularly if they're playing a game in Vic now. Just call it round 1. It's like spinal tap with the amp goes to 11, why not just make the top volume 10. Or another example a fish and chip place near my old house had a half minimum chips, why not just call that the minimum. AFL really have some stupid ideas.

all these extra games, extra teams, extra players, extra rules and now extra finals, just water down the product for me.
They really have no idea how to implement change that doesn't grind on people.
For instance next year they're instructing umpires to ball it up quicker and not wait for the rucks to run over.

Ok that's a tick, except there's gonna be scenarios where neither side nominates in time and the umpire throws it up to literally no one. What an embarrassment

Just ****ing make it 1 person from each team is allowed to contest that's it, why the **** is it some weird nomination system

Does feel very knee-jerk after this season had most of the top 8 locked in with several weeks to go but it seemed to be an anomaly. Most years 7-11 is a game or two difference. Maybe this adds some extra fan interest for a week but unlikely to impact finals results (but def see us being the first team to lose to 10th :$)

Wildcard or no, it shouldn't count as a finals win. Otherwise just call it for what it is, an elimination final.
I'm not sure I really understand the distinction either way. What does it mean to 'count' as a final?

Essendon haven't won a final since 2004. The AFL's said Wildcard round will count as one.
Sure, but like who cares? Finals are a means to an end and finals records are a mess anyway since you get a better finals record making a prelim from the bottom half of the 8 than you do if you win a QF.

Separating them from the finals seems even more pointless.

Saw a clip of mic'd up King at training. I liked this bit. "Boys this will be more controlled, kick mark only, but we still want to go forward with the ball. So it's not just a save the game thing. We still want to attack and go forward, but we do it on our terms with the out number."

Happy to disagree, it's not a hill I'll die on. Put it on the pile of all the other corporate gimmicks and game improvements. Music after goals, a wildcard round to make finals that counts as a final so actually is a final anyway, half of every preview video on the official site being dedicated to a multi recommendation, multiple day draft night. I'm just trying to watch footy.
