hi looking to buy a new desktop computer, but it has to be from dell.

i'm looking to buy a computer that operates fairly quickly, what figures contribute to that?

is it processor (such as Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core Processor E5200), memory (such as 4GB2 DDR-2 SDRAM Memory), or graphic card (such as 256MB ATI® Radeon™ HD 3450).

basically, what makes a computer fast?

Dell's shit. You will have to pack your computer up and have to pay for interstate support.

Go with something else.

You need a package deal.

There are a ton of variables here scoots..
Are you getting it for gaming, general home use, simple internet etc etc??

Why Dell???

Yer actually what are the best laptops/notebooks on the market at the moment in terms of going into year 12 this year and wanting one for assignments, internet and downloading torrents. Hoping for it to last through UNI aswell. Price range around 1000-1200.

Toshiba is a good brand for a laptop
as is Azus

Buying your own parts and building/getting it built yourself is cheaper and will be a lot better than store bought PC's

Pretty much sums it up. Decide what you need it for, then you can decide what you need in it. I also second the Dell question.

What you said in the OP is plenty for that. If you want to play newer games a better graphics card would help but other than that you should be fine.

Above everything else the processor is the primary concern however - sticking a gnarly processor into a below par board will produce less than satisfactory results. RAM is important but good RAM is more important.

Graphics cards do nothing to speed up the computer in themselves but of course are important when it comes to Graphics intensive applications.

If you are set on a Dell machine then go with one. The good thing about Dells (and the other machine builders) are that the components are usually matched well. If you find yourself continually adding to the machine when you are going through the order then it's advisable to jump up to the next machine - it usually ends up cheaper. I would opt for a Nvidia card over an ATI one if it's an option.

any idea of what you plan to do at uni?

future proof yourself,
at least a 512 graphics card doesnt change price much,
high end dual core processor
yes as much ram as possible

if your adding a screeen to all this shop around.

i always get my pcs custom built you get more for a similar price.

a good processor and good ram make a pc run faster.

i got a desktop without a screen last year from office works for $750
it is a quad core 6600 i think with 2 gig of ram. i am able to have many internet pages going, msn, itunes, play online pc game and download and it handles it pretty well.

but how come your going for a dell? the problem with dells are that you can not really upgrade them much

Visit MSY the computer shop. they are the cheapest computers in australia hands down.

if you are running XP you dont really need more than 2gig of RAM. anything more is just a novelty. im not saying its bad but this is what i was told by multiple comp ppl when building my pc.

if its for gaming get an 8800GT GFX card. no need for the new 9000 series.
8800 > 9600 anyway. You probably just need 500watt power supply and a case can be bough for ~100. GIGABYTE ep135 motherboard should do at appx 120$? maybe less by now and obv the processor is most important

i highly doubt you will need a quadcore processor. if you want a pc for games your better off getting a core2 duo because they are actually more powerful (individually) i believe and rung ames better. on a budget u dont really need to get the top of everything and can get a decent computer for <$1000 not including screens etc.

if u do want to purchase a screen i cant go past recommending at least a 22" i'm currently using a viewsonic VA226w.

oh yeah and if u want make sure your new pc can run 2 screens to boot. very handy. im planning on picking up anotehr 19" monitor sometime in the near future

defantly agree with this, went there yesterday and it was the first time i have ever been to a pc shop and had to stand outside in the line. much cheaper then what u will get anywhere else

MSY isn't necessarily the cheapest. Look up the part on staticice.com.au and you will find places that have them cheaper. But as a whole, MSY has cheap parts
