Allow me to be a little self indulgent if I can.
We are all a tad excited,not too much mind you but enough to smile inside.We've all been duped before and know how and when to keep our powder dry as that great article in the Age this morning referred to.It's that article along with a few posts on bigfooty recently that have led to this thread.
I am comfortable that this upcoming period for our footy club will be the real deal,and a long sustained run of being back at the upper echelon where we belong.
Firstly we have had to listen to all the knockers come for Benny Gale when he drew up the ambitious plans for our future.For us though ,how fantastic was it that an off field leader would come out and in true Richmond style make such grandiose noises,thumbing our nose to the conservative nay sayers..the tiger began stirring that day.The fact that it was one of our own-a real Richmond man made it a lot easier to buy into it,but the fact we did whilst everyone else just shook their heads was to me,so Richmond.The Richmond we used to know.
Now whilst we are still a long way off those heady targets the momentum is begin to slowly build.Slowly but very surely on and off field,and i can't wait to see the egg on faces.
I for one and I'm sure many of you are the same feel sick in the guts when i read things on bigfooty like 'Great to see you guys improving,you're my second favourite team' I suspect that to be the younger generation but I can promise that they will wish they never said that.
The Age article allued to Richo being a favourite because his team couldn't hurt you.Well Jack Riewoldt,Martin,Lids and Cotchin stand by to become the most loathed players in the A.F.L.
We were despised.Had all the star players so much so that blokes like Bryan Wood,Kevin Morris,Bruce Monteath,Barry Rowlings etc etc are all but forgotten.Players we have considered stars at Richmond in the last 20 years wouldn't hold a candle to them.
Had the big guns off-field making all the big calls,leading the way in their time.Hello Benny Gale.
Had all the tough blokes as Wally Matera mentions in his great post in the Rance thread.When was the last time we had a Rance do that? A Daniel Jackson,Jake King or Matty White have a bit of shit in them?
Probably the Scotty Turner,Stuey Maxfield days and we looked half a good side then with not much talent.Before that of course Balme,Sheedy,Brown,Mclean,Mcghie who passed the batten onto Jimmy Jess etc.My God I would have hated us too.
It got to a point where the old joke was that we were Noahs Ark,had two of everything Roach/Taylor, Raines/Riolli, Edwards/Cloke
etc,how ridiculous to have two gun FF's,CHF's and centremen.
That is of course where it all went pear shaped and we got too smart for own good.Four of those blokes ended up at Collingwood!
Up until then no way known would anyone be dare wishing us the
best as an opposition supporter.Richmond were king,the pubs were
rocking,huge crowds and an unbelievable arrogance.
AND..Certainly wouldn't have been logging onto Bigfooty to read
some ****ing bloke calling himself Rockybalboa and supporting of
ALL ****ing clubs Footscray standing up on his box having a crack at all things Richmond.
It's shit like this that has me just sitting here
waiting,smiling,laughing and busting to see Rockybalboa experience
what it's like to see Richmond-from players to fans shitting in his
face and telling him what a peasant club the Western Bulldogs are.
