gillies for sure. in the 2003 final everyone had a field day but only ponting and martyn really went on with it

I think Gilly's as he simply won us the game of his own bat

Punter is an exciting batsman to watch but Gilly is just murderous when in full bash mode

I think consideration for Gilly in that his form has been fairly poor as well so to come through in the final speaks volumes for the man

Gilchrist. While I remember watching Pontings and thinking "I've never seen anything like this before" I have to go Gilchrist because he single-handedly won the match. Look at everyone elses strike rates and imagine the result if he hadn't have played...

gilly - daylight - ponting (and i'm a massive punter fan)

how many batsmen have ever looked like scoring a double ton in 38 overs before??

As good as punters knock was it didn't win the wc outright like gilly's knock

Gilly's knock was pure cricketing violence, it has to be up with the best one day knocks ever played.
Back then 300+ scores were pretty rare, and getting 359 or whatever it was definitely put the match beyond doubt. Having said that, I voted Gilchrist because he did it with the batsmen around him getting about 20 or 30 each, whereas when Ponting did it there were a couple of 50s from teammates from memory.

don't get me wrong, both were fantastic..

BUT I really thought, from a cricketing purist's perspective, Punter's knock was more stylish and had a better array of shots.. Gilly seemed to play almost everything onto the leg side..

In 2003 Punter played almost every shot imaginable to a batsman and never looked like going out (and didn't)..!! Gilly on the other hand was dropped twice, one by the bowler and one by Sangakarra..

I remember one of Ponting's sixes (which was massive..!!!) was pulled viciously to a pace bowler and ended up stuck in the middle of a Pepsi ad near the scoreboard..

I'd love to see a wagon wheel of both player's inning's if someone can find it?!

Yes but martyn made a run a ball 80 odd to back him up( as well as gilly/hayden setting up a platform to launch)

Apart from a little while for sanath nobody seemed all that comfortable in the 07 final but gilchrist managed 150 odd off less than 110 balls.

freakish stuff, not that it takes away from pontings innings which is also up with the best played.

i went ponting because we had lost 2 early wickets and he started slow and then went ballastic and put the game out of reach of a powerful india batting line up.

i didnt think sri lanka were as much threat as india were 4 years ago thats what i based my vote on

Just what I could get off cricinfo:

I noticed that both batsman had most of their runs on the legside.
But Gilly had more on the offside than Punter (mainly due to the shots down towards long off).

Ponting hit 5 sixes to Long-on.
Gilly hit 3 to the same area.

Punter had 3 sices through midwicket, Gilly also had 3.

FoW: 1-105 (Gilchrist, 13.6 ov), 2-125 (Hayden, 19.5 ov)

Yeah, we were in big trouble!!

Gilchrist.

Why? He made 149 where as no one else could get close. He made it off 104, a strike rate of about 140, where as no one could get close. Even when Ponting, Clarke, Symonds had a free range to hit out in the end, they didn't even get close to striking it like Gilchrist. Just look at the boundary totals. Combined batsmen without Gilchrist was about 110 runs off 120 balls. He was just on another level in that match.

Ponting was also unbelievable, but in that game, other batsmen did actually get in and were okay at timing the ball. A more complete and cricketing innings than Gilchrist, but in terms of who was higher compared to the other players on that day, it has to be Gilchrist.
