This guy is a gun. Have had big wraps on him for years now he's like a better, less spazz version of Mcullum. Finally made his (well overdue) test debut under extremely strenuous circumstances and still scored 50 like a boss. Hopefully the selectors will finally see sense and start picking him for all 3 forms like he should be. Look forward to seeing how his career progresses. In Glenn we trust!

I would temper that a little bit courtesy of the drops and the no ball dismissal however all 3 of those incidents were a player just making silly mistakes rather than anything particularly technical. He’s got the tools to succeed, developing a test mindset of avoiding those lapses to go with his obvious talent will be crucial

Between Phillips, Will Young and Devon Conway (from September), there's going to be some pretty good candidates to replace Ross Taylor when he gives it away for the Kiwis.
Taylor should be replaced asap, i know he's not the only one thats been ordinary but i think its time given his age.

he literally has a double century, a century, two 80s and a 50 in his last 12 test innings

Hasn't played a FC game in over a month so did pretty well under the circumstances. Pretty typical with the scheduling these days though.

Was passable. That’s it.

Lyon dropped two absolute soda’s and he was dismissed off of a no-ball.

Looked pretty ordinary early, but it’s his first test...

I’d be tempering my expectations before seeing him a few more times

Has he deliberately modelled his batting after Steve Smith?

Yes, said as much in a radio interview before day 4.

Said Smiths backlift and takeaway has helped with his alignment through the ball.

It's more than just that though. He even does the same pad fidgets between deliveries lol. Looked almost choreographed, not really a compulsive twitch like when Smith does it.

I was surprised more wasn't made of it-- I mean, the telecast put up the split screen of their pre-ball being exactly the same (kind of weird in itself), but for christ sakes he's got the same bat stickers, mimicking the unusual between ball routines. He's pretty much a clone, it's amazing to think that Smith has already had this kind of impression on a current international cricketer. Never seen anything like it.

The funny thing is when he actually plays strokes he looks a lot more aesthetically pleasing than Smith. A few drives were Clarkesque, and his pull shot looks like Aaron Finch.

Just so we are clear, Taylor literally has a double century, a century, two 80s and a 50 in his last 12 test innings.
Mate there's a thread on this page calling Cummins overrated and another calling for Lyon to be sacked so don't stress too hard about our resident geniuses calling for Taylor to go

Yep, I can't really see Taylor leaving unless he wants to, or goes on a long run of single-figure scores.

NZ aren't really spoilt for choice in replacing him.

When you average >60 after 70 tests, I'd be expecting a lot of people would be trying to take as much of your mannerisms as possible.

Devon Conway has been tearing up the Plunket Shield for the last couple of years, and he'll be eligible for selection in a few months. I imagine when that happens, he will come straight into the Test team.

Conway bats #3 for Wellington, so that will put Taylor under a bit of pressure. With NZ committed to fielding a fifth bowler, he will be fighting Phillips and Nicholls for one spot in the middle order.

Scored a century off against just 46 balls against WI yesterday. Fastest t20 century by a New Zealander. Also got a runout and took a spectacular catch in the field. What a cricketer!
