What year was more glorious as a fan?

  • 2017: A great season topped off with the premiership but arguably not the best team during the H & A

  • 2018: A year full of gloating and trolling as Premiers, the best in the business! (Albeit a sad end)

I remember that 2017 loss to the scats at Kitty Litter park...
I felt we were better than that loss and was itching for a rematch!
Which was a different feeling to previous years where that game and result would have been seen as an honourable loss, 2017 was more like FTS, we'll get them next time!
It was an exciting time to be a Tiger supporter!!!

Personally I remember the 2017 games before the granny, the results the plays the excitement, where I was, the post game talk with other tiger supporters Monday morning...
The GF...nada..just how I got there and how I came home...just a euphoric blurred....
And everything after the GF, Swan street, the newspapers, BF forums...
So happy with my hoarse voice...
So happy with fellow supporters at work...
The best feeling ever cos it came out of the blue and we rode that wave to the GF together...
Damm tears again...

2017 was a more fun ride, for me.

2016 left me feeling a bit detached and sceptical that we could play any decent footy in 2017. Then, I went to all three pre-season games, thinking more and more – something’s different. They’ve changed things here. They were moving the ball forward! They were ****ing tackling! Team selection was different. Still, I was sceptical we’d beat anyone decent. We beat a few shit teams, then Adelaide belted us in Rnd 6. Then we beat the reigning premiers the next week. Dusty was off the charts. JR was jumping in marking contests with no intention other than knocking the ball clear to the mosquito fleet. Rioli had improved. The backline were a wall. Still, after three losing Elimination Finals, there was a sizeable monkey sitting on our back… Then we flogged Geelong and the lid went into orbit. The next month was sheer footy joy.

2018 was the year I got to experience what it’s like to trust that your team is going to play great footy, every week, every opponent. That was amazing too. But the trajectory started high and stayed high, then dipped at the end.

Bring on 2019!

I’m bloody glad that 2017 happened before 2018. Last year was a whole different feeling at the footy. Felt relaxed and calm just enjoying the footy with the knowledge that something had happened that I never thought would. Pretty much viewed everything as a bonus after that.
For me it made the Prelim last year so much easier to swallow than I’d have ever imagined something like that.
Had moved on and just accepted it without getting the shits or anything by half time pretty much. I’d have lost my shit If that had been the 2017 PF.

2017 best because it came out of nowhere. Probably have to go back 50 years to 1967 to see something similar.

Now there is expectation. Even in 1980 there was expectation as we were the best team.

I think a lot of people are seriously underrating our H&A season in 17! We didn't finish top but we missed top by half a game!
We started the season by winning 5 in a row.
We beat all our traditional rivals (Coll/Car/Ess)
We beat Melbourne on ANZAC Eve despite being well down at 3/4 time.
We beat Port at home (I was at that game celebrating my 40th with a heap of mates)
We beat WC and GWS in a couple of real slog games that we would have lost in other years.
We put Freo to the sword on their home deck when in previous years, we would have been up by 10 goals at 3/4 time but won by less than 40.

I think the fact that we had such an unbelievable finals series perhaps dims the glow on how good we were in the H&A. Only a few very close losses to good teams stopped us from finishing top that year as well.

I can understand how it could happen though. That finals series was the best month of my life to date and everything else in footy before or after pales in comparison.

But, if given a choice between watching the 5 best H&A games of 2017 or 2018, I'd take 2017 every day of the week.

True, it was great but if you remember there was still a lot of nerves and questions...the media were running with the whole "dare to dream" story. The opposition fans were running with the "still haven't won a final" story. I for one hardly soaked up the 2017 regular season sadly. I was busy looking ahead and hoping. So although in hindsight it was amazing, the belief that we could actually win it didn't start for me until half time in the grand final.

Absolutely! I honestly don't know what I would have done if we lost like that in 2017. As soon as we lost in 2018 I got a huge rush of gratitude for the year before...and another wave of relief. It really did show us how hard it is to win the thing...and we did it...and nobody can take that away from us. :)
