I am sure the club couldn't believe it's luck when Clayton Collard was available at pick 31. Then when Brock O"Brien was there at pick 52, they must have been pinching themselves. Then the Shadow-Man was certainly worth a roll of the dice at pick 79.
Now we find out that they went to Qld 13 times to watch Chris Smith and they rang him before the ND and told him they may pick him up if things fell his way. My guess is that they didn't grab him only because they used the picks on guys they didn't expect to get, in Clay-Boy, BO'B and Shadow.
Can you imagine how quickly they must have jumped on young Smith when he was still there at pick 13 in the rookie draft? They must have almost crapped their daks with excitement.
Then they get yet another local Freo boy, and r/u in the Lynn Medal (Hase is a former winner) in Andrew Foster and their back-up FB in two time premiership and two time state rep Darren "Ready-to" Rumble.
Copping - meh. Obviously the club had committed to him, and they see something in a bloke that is there training 6 times per week... things that we supporters can't know about. Good luck to him as a Purple Warrior. Like Crowley two years ago - it's all up to him now.
I reckon Dean Kelly's bad luck in not being a Docker is because of the good run of luck in nabbing these guys over these two drafts. And while I feel for him, I am also very excited at the fact that they have got the players they weren't expecting to be around when their picks came.
And that can only be a very good thing!
