There has been plenty said about our forward line heading into 2017, with the expectation largely being that we will struggle to kick winning scores this year.

Whilst that may well be the case I am nonetheless buoyant about the talent we have developing forward of centre and look forward to tracking that development as the season progresses.

Thursday night whilst we obviously fell well short of the Tigers, I was pleased we managed to kick 14 majors. Even more pleasing was that those 14 goals came from 8 different players.

This is absolutely crucial for us this year - we do not have one dominant force in the forward line so it is crucial we continue to find multiple avenues to goal.

Last year we saw Wright lead our goal kicking with just 22 goals - who will it be in 2017, and how many will they kick?

I will keep an updated tally in the OP.

If Weitering keeps switching then I will say Jack and think he could kick around 35. If Weitering stays permanent, I don't think it would be too outlandish to suggest he could get to 40. Good thing about those two are that they are beautiful kicks of the footy and will make the most of their opportunities.

People talk about Casboult making the oppositions best defender accountable but he never does. Sitting back & waving for the long kick in makes it so easy for opponents to cover a zone & get there when the kick comes in.

Weitering appears to be the key to our forward line. He actually did make Rance accountable by covering a heap of ground & making good leads. Set up goals for Wright & Silvagni with his great disposal & awareness, kicked 3 himself, kept Rance out of the game.

Subtle changes in round 1 with the forward line in round 1. With Weitering playing mobile CHF (not unlike a young Nick Riewoldt) means that Levi was more a 2nd ruck/forward. Worked pretty well I thought as I thought that we won the rucks overall and Kruezer/Casbolt kicked 3 (nearly 4). Think that Levis main opposition for a spot will come from Phillips when he is back. If Levi was to go as F.A. agent I think that his value is far higher as a hybrid ruck/forward (especially if his kicking holds up) than as a KPF. Plenty of teams looking for one of these and would probably get a 2nd rounder as opposed to a 3rd rounder as a KPF. Could for example be rucking against Jack Watts for a period this week and would clean him up.

Would never get a 2nd rounder for Levi. Thats crazy, Travis Cloke just got traded for pick 76. He's won a premiership and has a far higher ceiling than Levi. Levi is 27 and never once shown anything close to Clokes best. Plus Levi's rucking in our own defensive 50 led to at least 2 Richmond goals directly from the stoppage. We'd be lucky to get what we gave for Palmer IMO.

Yeah Casboult has decent value as a forward/ruck, if he could perform this year just as his RFA comes up it's be perfect.

You're talking about a trade but at the end of the year Casboult is a restricted free agent. So you're half right, no-one would give up anything for him. If it all works out we could get tier 3 compo & end up back in the 2nd round

The compensation formula is cloudy and unclear but it depends on length of contract and dollar value of that contract. Levi isn't going to net much of anything in either of those categories. Are compensation picks handed out further back in the draft...?

Proably should have given more info. 2nd rounder if his kicking holds up, can kick 2 goals a game and ruck competitively for 30% of the game. Kind of like Leigh Brown who was rubbish at Freo, bog average at North and a key component in a premiership team when he moved to Collingwood at 27.

And of course Ty Vickery who netted Richmond a second rounder last year at 26. Its not what a team is prepared to trade as a F.A. but more what they are prepared to pay Levi that determines what we receive. Granted he would need to put together a strong year but will still be 27 at the end of the season.

There's 5 tiers with the last one just after your pick in the 3rd.
Casboult is a couple of years younger than Mayne but wouldn't get offered as much. Probably wishful thinking that we'd get a 2nd rounder like Freo did

You also need to keep in mind Collingwood had made it so clear that they couldn't wait to get rid of him that they had no bargaining power at the trade table,

Think complete opposite to the Gibbs scenario.

Levi's kicking looked slightly better, just hoping Sav pays off.

2 goals a game. Thats 50 goals for the year. Thats a purple patch. would we then want to give him the flick?

OP updated to include the Melbourne game.

With another 3 goals Wright has already put some separation between himself and the rest of the pack. Good to see that the inconsistency which has previously plagued his career from year to year doesn't seem to have set in in 2017.

There is obviously a long way to go, but if he's going to be a consistent threat around goals it's hard to see who is going to stop him from leading our goal kicking tally for a second year in a row.

Amazingly, nobody seems to have voted for him. Except me....just now.
