Simple what are you made of?
Flesh, blood and bones
What are they made up of?
Cells
What are your cells made up of?
Atoms
What are atoms made up of?
Sub atomic particles
What are sub atomic particles made up of?
Energy.

This is highlighted by experiments done with devices such has the LHC

You take one sub atomic particle like say an electron and it's anti matter equivalent positron (despite the name it's still matter just with reversed polarities) they come into contact with each other and.................BANG

The matter destroys itself what's released? Pure energy.

Then you have the whole nucleus bomb thing.

Disagree sub atmic particles are not made up of energy. They contain energy. Same as you and me contain energy but are made up of matter. Energy has no physical structure to make up anything. Matter may contain energy in its chemical bonds and this energy can be released when chemical bonds are released or created.

My point which has probably been obscured was that if god proves his existence to us by revealing himself to our hearts could I prove it? I think unless you have shared such an experience you will answer no.[/quote]

An electron isn't made of anything though, it certainly didn't have any chemical bonds.

It's not correct to say its made up of matter it has mass, yes but we cant even detect an electron other then it's energy signature.

What could it be made of if not energy?

I'm feeling a tad toey.

Would greatly appreciate someone telling me which animals I'm allowed to have sex with.
According to the good book of course.

I mean is a female ( not male of course, it's the good book after all) Carlton supporter OK?

POTATO.

If sex with animals is what you are after, then cross Germany off your list of prospective destinations. They have banned sex with animals, much to the chagrin of German zoophiles keen to continue their relationships with their consenting pets. It is in today's Sunday Age.

Is there anything wrong with people believing in god? Not necessarily. But does that mean that god exists? No way.

When Christians talk about god and following his teachings, what they really mean is Jesus and the words which are attributed to him by the Bible; a growing compilation redacted over hundreds of years by some of the Churches greatest minds for some not very spectacular results.

The gospel of St Mark is considered the oldest of the Gospels, but was written after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. As the Theologian Harnack pointed out - hoisting himself on his own petard in the process:

“It does not really make sense to argue over the historical reliability of these and other sermons in the apostolic history; we need only think of all the conditions required for a literally exact, or even an approximately correct, transmission of such a sermon: it would have had to be written down immediately by an auditor (properly speaking, it should be stenographic), and these records of the various sermons would have to be preserved for more than half a century in circles of hearers who were for the most part Jews and heathen and indifferent or hostile to what they had heard, and finally collected by the historian from the most scattered points! Any one who has realized how impossible all these things are will know once for all what to think of all these sermons: that is, in the stories of the apostles as in all the secular historians of antiquity these speeches are free compositions, in which the author has his heroes speak in the way that he himself thinks they could have spoken in the given situation”.

A study of the gospels reveals that they are often at loggerheads and toned down for certain effects at others. The glorification of the poor and damnation in Luke becomes the poor in spirit in Matthew while condemnation of the rich is ommitted altogether. Then there is the matter of the trial of Jesus by Pontius Pilate which accords with neither Jewish or Roman custom. The Bible may present this as an extraordinary person requiring an extraordinary trial, but the pagan sources make no mention of Jesus, except for a later forgery of a work by the Jewish historian Josephus by an overzealous Christian copyist.

Was there an historic Jesus? Probably. There was a posthumous cult that sprang up around Pythagoras, as well as many other miracle workers and redeemers like Bar Kochba. But getting to the historical kernel is extremely difficult when it has been overlaid by centuries of editing and outright falsifications.

How do we even determine his attitude? Luke has Jesus full of class invective:

“How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God” Luke 18:24

“Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh ... But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation. Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.” Luke 6:20

And James:

“Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver is cankered: and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you. Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord” James 5:1

“Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted; But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways. ... Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats? Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?” James 1: 19-11; 2: 5 to 7

As the composition of the Church changes, or changes in an internal struggle followers and hence for the image of Jesus, Matthew (whose gospel comes later) knocks the rough edges off. No longer is there a glorification of the poor in wealth, but those poor in spirit:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven ... Blessed are they, which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled” Matthew: 5

There are so many problems with the oldest (and closest) records of Jesus supposed teaching it isn't funny. The discrepancies say more about the internal contradictions and tensions of the early church than they do about Jesus. If that seems far fetched, think about the enormous tensions in the Bolshevik Party before Lenin's corpse went cold.

Damn, next thing they'l be banning is that guy that has sex with remnants of the Berlin wall.

This is going to be bad, do not read the following kiddies.....

Nope I deleted it......shit, could've been much worse.

You've neatly dodged his point about sub-atomic particles by addressing only electrons. Protons and Neutrons are composed of sub-sub-atomic particles (quarks) and have mass. Mass can be converted to energy and vice versa, but to say one is made up of the other is incorrect.

And on the point of electrons, they can still be matter despite being unable to be broken down any further into smaller particles. The facts you reference regarding electrons do not necessitate electrons being energy rather than matter. Rather like a prime number; they can be indivisible and yet still /= 0.

So many posts, sorry, I couldn't be bothered reading them all. But here's my two cents.

I'm thankful Australia doesn't have the deranged and dangerous Christians that the U.S. has.

Christopher Hitchens is my hero. Look up his videos on youtube if you want a good laugh.

I can almost agree with Christians on the point that there has been some 'divine' intervention on this planet at some time in history. By 'divine' I mean, not of our world. But really, organized religion has no place in an intelligent world. We don't need it.

Christianity - like all religions - is probably just a cargo cult.
