It is laughable that Goddard is captain, he has no leadership qualities and is a very negative and selfish footballer. Off the top of my head I cannot think of a player with worse body language. This is a bad start from Worsfold. First he recruits Crowley (a banned drug user), then he appoints Goddard captains. Questions need to be asked about Worsfold, like, is he up to the job? Is he the full quid?
 
Goddard is the biggest sook in the AFL, the media must love him because every time they lend him a mic he has something to complain or winge about. Don't think he'll make a good captain if you want me to judge from that, which is all i have to judge him on asides from playing ability which is actually good

yeah he isn't shy of belittling players on the field.. not sure he is the best option to mentor the kids, but I guess it is a case of last man standing? But who really cares, its the bombers...if Goddard helps the Bombers implode even more then awesome choice haha

Unfortunately the Bombers aren't full to the brim with leaders in there squad right now, my personal choice would of been Mark Baguley who is an under rated person and player outside of the Essendon club I think. Him and Zaharakis I think are the only two who have been with the club through all the drama and as such his been thrust into a leadership role at the end of 2015.

Goddard will need a drastic change of attitude to be the captain Essendon needs, the proof will be in the pressure cooker of the season itself.
 
He has been an on field leader for the past couple of years but you could also understand if some of the younger players aren't particularly fond of him. Maybe Chapman calling him out publicly will be the making of Goddard now that he has the role. It might make him more consultative, more approachable, more encouraging. Captaincy is a big responsibility and will make most people consider their approach to the job.

It's just a matter of whether his natural instincts come out in the heat of battle or he's able to temper it somewhat.

Back in the day captains were fearsome and you didn't want to earn their attention on field so you would strive not to. Maybe it will help Essendon's on field stocks, if not Goddard's personally.

Pains me to say this but Mark Baguley is an excellent defender, wish he played at North.

I tend to agree. I think it is a great opportunity for him to improve his reputation. As nobody expects him to have the job for more than a year, he hasn't really got anything to lose. He could hardly do worse than the last bloke.

Very selfish footballer. Not what you'd call a team football player.

I've seen a few times during games last year where he will deliver a bullet like pass only for his team mate to fumble the ball further up the ground he has every right to crack it at his team mate when that shit happens.

No he doesn't. Not unless the player was lairising or attacking the contest half heartedly.

All players make skill errors. The time to bake your team mates is when they have gone against the game plan or haven't given their best effort.

I think Goddard will thrive under the leadership but he needs to have a good understanding of what is and isn't constructive criticism. I also think that if Essendon are really struggling the burden of leadership will wear him down, so I'm sticking with my original opinion in this thread that the captaincy should be shared.

Maybe he should have gone to a team with a chance at a flag then and not gone where the money was. If anything you can say that mercenary got exactly what he deserved.
Go to the Hawks or Cats on the minimum, then he would have very little to worry about.
